Newbe At "Computer Recording"

I use a 4 track digital recorder to record my songs, i then go out (RCA) into the computer (1/8") and record the song through sound forge. On a recent trip to Guitar Center I learned of a better process by using a computer. I plan on buying a computer probibly a dell desktop (cause I'm only 16 and have a limited budget) and a M-Audio 410 Fire wire interface. I need to know the best multi-track software for a computer. Pro Tools? Also any requirements (hardware, cables, etc.) necessary for the computer like hard drive, sound cards, anything like that. Thanks
 
i wouldn't reccomend pro tools for you. it's too expensive and you have to use digidesign interfaces. try something on a lower budget like adobe audition (formerly cool edit pro). i'm guessing you're a student still, so here's a link to a place where you get a discount on it for being in school.

that with your interface should be good. are you just going to be doing one track at a time or what?
 
Thanks for the info. Yeah I'm probibly gonna do one track at a time, that way i just keep layering on as many as I need and edit them individually. I formally couldn't do that with the Br-532 (4 track recorder). It was guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Which really left no room for overdubs and as I recorded them on to my computer through sound forge (6.0) I had to edit the song as one giving ever track the same levels and effects. I don't consider myself "recording" challenged I know a lot of products how they work and things of that nature. Right now im dealing with a Behringer UB-1002 a small mixer, The Br-532, and a Rolls/Bellari Tube preamp which gets no use. So as you can see I'm doing "ok" right now for someone my age, unlike some bands who don't havea clue and buy a $20 radio shack mic and go 1/8" into a tape deck from the late 70's. But thank you for the feedback. Oh i also trust a good processor and some DDR would come in handy for editing tracks?

Well... if that band actually sounds great with the $20 RS mic and the late-70's tape deck, then they're doing something right! ;)

Hint - it's not so much the gear, it's the engineering chops behind it... Goerge Massenburg will turn out much better-sounding audio with a PortaStudio than a monkey with a Neve!
