Hi guys!

Newb here with 0 home recording experience. I need some help setting my computer for recording and was hoping someone can help me through.

I have a Windows 7 system and am using M-AudioFast Track Pro interface, a condenser microphone and trying to use Reaper. Myquestion is regarding proper set-up for all of this!

Microphone goes into interface, phantom power is on and signal goes into the software but I always hear the vocals in on one side on my headphones only. I played around with settings but can't slve the issue.

I also am having horrible problems trying to listen to pre-recorded tracks, they all get jittery and breaking up so I am at a loss here!

I need someone who is willing to help me step-by-step here since I have no clue what to do here.

My background. I am a singer since age 16 (am now 39) and have always recorded in studio, never at home and am now trying to do this so I can do some work with other musicians around the country without having to spend money on studio time, etc.

Anyone? Thanks in advance.

Download asio4all drivers. Do you have the headphones plugged into the M Audio? Do you hear the precorded songs in both headphone speakers? If you only hear the mic on one side, your 'pan' in Reaper is all the way to one side for that channel/track.

Which device is Reaper using for output? In the Settings somewhere.... under Audio...

It sounds to me like reaper is expecting a stereo input (2 Channels) and you are only recoding from 1 mic (1 Channel) which is mono
On the track in reaper you should be able to right click on the meter or anywhere on the track header and you will probably find that it is defaulting to inputs 1 & 2 (or L&r). you need to change that to record channel one only (assuming you are plugging into input one on the fast track)

That will give you a mono recording that will playback equally on both speakers rather than a stereo recoding with information only on the left channel

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I installed the ASIO driver and right-clicked on the meter and voila! Life is good again The ASIO driver is so much better and works like a charm!

Last question and I will let you guys sleep, What is the easiest way to select a portion of the recording without afecting the other track?

Thanks again guys! Tomorrow I am spending the day reading the software manual so I can stop askind dumb questions!

Copy the track you want to work with to a new track, and then do what you want with that.
