I am a true beginner with recording. I am looking for something with virtual instruments (basically a backing band with several choices) that is also easy to use. Will I just need the software or will I have to purchase other components as well. I have a PC not a MAC. Thank you for any guidance.

Band in a box comes to mind, but easy? not really!

There are others, but all have learning curves, so I can't tell you they're easy.

Download reaper, and take a look at the PSR series of Yamaha personal keyboards, they have pretty good sounding instruments, and a variety of backing tracks for you to play with.

Hey Jethro not much more to offer than what Stephen told you but wanted to say hello to a neighbor.

Welcome man...virtual instruments can basically replicate live instruments, with the exception of guitars (I've struggled to find a convincing strumming VST)...but apart from that, with a little work, you should be able to accomplish what you need to with virtual instruments.

If you've never worked with programming a sequencer (rather than playing 'live' into one), you will find a significant learning curve is involved.

What exactly are you trying to record - original songs with you singing, karaoke, soundtracks ...?
