Newb confusion

So I almost have a PC build set to go but I still have some confusion- do I need a sound card to make music with my PC? Here is what I think is needed: Computer+ software (Reason 4 or Ableton Live 7)+ midi controller= music. Or does the PC have to have a sound card too in order to make music? This question may seem stupid to some but I am just getting started. Help.

Yes, you will need a soundcard. Your motherboard might have a built in sound card, but it will not be enough even for a beginner. Try to avoid SoundBlaster; you might want to consider something like this to start with:

If you're just using reason and not worrying about recording audio, the builtin soundcard will probably be fine. I run reason on my macbook with the builtin sound when I'm on the road and its no different than running through my mbox 2 pro.

If you're wanting to actually record audio, you'll want to get an actual recording soundcard.

Given he has a Midi Keyboard that can connect via USB yes. If he wants to use his midi controller via MIDI I/O then he should get a soundcard.
