New Wave/Dream style song, looking for advice on mixing and mastering!

Hello, HomeRecording forum! I am new here but I've been recording for awhile yet I've had no real training. Most of what I've learned comes from the internet. The following song is my latest mix. I just mix to balance and make the instrumentation even but I have no idea how to polish it. Lately I've been going through vocal tracks and bass tracks using ReaEQ that has a built in spectrometer in order to sweep and identify bad plosives and boomy bass frequencies respectively. Let me know what you think of:

1) the mixing job
2) how I can improve it
3) the composition itself

The composition itself has muddy vocals for aesthetic purpose. I'm just asking how can I make it sound the way it does, but in a more professional way?

If you want the vocals to sound like that, I think you're going to have to make room for them with EQ cuts on the other instruments. Also reverb on the instruments to push them back and less on the vocals to bring them forward.
 
Agreed ^ Don't be afraid of the vocals, your drawing more negative attention to them by drowning them in reverb, and making them low in the mix. They have to come up a lot more.

Also your not using the stereo field at all, the mix sounds mono. Pan your instruments (drums included). Your Kick is buried.

Hey. I like it. I like the vocal delivery. I agree they should be "louder", or at least more discernable. I have a feeling this will be a lot of cutting frequencies from other instruments. The song sounds a little harsh on my monitors. Also, using a reverb for a 'room' send might help a lot.

I'm not the biggest fan of the sub-octave vocal doubling that I think I'm hearing, I think its taking away from the song. Maybe only at certain parts? But this is just my opinion, I can hear that St. Vincent does this a lot in her songs, and she's one of my favorites.

Do you have compression on the master output? As a fellow duffer mixer, I would highly recommend using some else to master it.

Have you read Mike Seniors Mixing Secrets for the small studio? I've found a lot of practical advice in it.

Anyway, I like it.
 
Thanks I'll take a look at that thingy. How does one go about bringing the kick out?
 
Like the song and the beat a lot. I agree that the vocals should be more up front and lower the volume of the "dark" voice.
