New tunes

I listened to Guadalajara and Miss You Smile.
Gaudalajara-The drum machine is a bit cheesy my friend. Also on both tune I thought there was a phasey thing going on with the drums. This could be part of the MP3 conversion. It's hard to tell from here. The guitar has that Ovation plugged in sound. A mic would've sounded better on the acoustic. When the lead starts it jumps out a little too much. It needs to set in the mix, not on top of it.
Miss Your Smaile-As I said, the drums have a phasey sound. Plus they're very weak. No ass to drive the tune. You have some decent chops on the guitar for sure but on this tune the guitar just feels wimpy. Not busting your chops my friend, just some things that imediately caught my attention.

will...listen...when not at work...

keep it on the front page for 5 more hours!!!

Thanks Track Rat. That's what I wanted, a gut reaction, good or bad.

guadalajara-

tremendo-
a very interesting drum track! well, on my system, i can't hear any low end in the drum track, and honestly, i'm not sure this wasn't the effect you were looking for.
The acoustic/electric part has a very distinct sound...... i hear more piezo than mic, if there's a mix there.... not sure...... good playing, nice solo........
i can't hear any bass guitar, maybe there's none in the mix......
cool groove........
real life story there with the lyrics, i can relate.......
good lead vocal, but some of the backgrounds sound either sharp, or on a note that i would have expected to be a half tone down, to match the harmonics of the chord changes....
not sure about the mix, tremundo, did you want it to be basically the sound of the acoustic/electric, with everything else kind of in the same sonic space? you could add some depth to the vocals, you could definitely beef up the low end of the drums.....
but a cool idea of the song. The guitar sound brand new, what is that?

Thanks Gonzo. I'll take all that into consideration.

I imagine you mean the guitar lead in Guadalajara. Actually, that's my Parker Fly Deluxe played using the stereo out directly into the VS1880. I used the country guitar patch in the effect card on the 1880. I've never tried anything like that before, but it worked for that song.

All the instruments sound pretty good,as is the vocal performance.
Just sounds like the levels aren't right on the vox.

Miss Your Smile, they were a little too loud.

Guadalajara,they were way too loud.

If I Have You,they were a tad too low,or you need to lower the drums.

I think you need more reverb on the first two also.JMHO

Nice guitar playing and the harmonies were right on spot.

Real good stuff overall.

Best to you,
Pete

First off....you do have chops as Track Rat said and these songs are good starting points for some real nice tunes so it's really a matter of getting your recording skills up. On all the songs there was a lack of level and presence to the instruments. The drums sound distant and a little muffled...same with the guitars. The vox is ok (except for being way too loud on Guadalajara) but it too, is dull sounding. You should work on your levels first and get them up where they're pushing your mixer a little more so they will have some life to them. They sound like you had the gain too far down in an effort to avoid distortion. But when they're too low....they don't drive the electronics enough, just like playing a guitar through an amp too low sounds kinda limp. That's where I would start and go from there with the EQ. Keep at it....I'd like to hear those guitar chops when they are rockin' a bit more.

As Promised...

Listened to Guadal...Gwad...

the one about "hangin' out."

:D

You've already had better ears than mine critique the sound. (Although I'd cut some mids or level or something in the VERY COOL LEAD, 'cause it kinda' hurt me just a tad).

Liked the song a ton. Reminds me of Paul Simon-ish...(during the 1970's...when he didn't suck:D ), only fresher. I don't know much about drums...is that a handclap? Little bells...cool.

Anyway, the tune's cool. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I enjoyed it.

Thanks guys, for all your input. That helps me get a clearer picture of what to work on next with the recordings.

When you guys mention the vocals too loud, lack of presence, lead too loud, etc, I hear it right away. But my mind has been so brainwashed with the tunes and sound, that I couldn't hear it before.

AWESOME HELP, THANKS!

Tom

On Miss ...

Ditto on the drums. No thump to them. Great lead work on the guitar. First rate. On the vocals - the "Woo Hoo Hoo Hoo" at the begining sounded forced. Vocally I would also like to hear some more dynamics. You had spots where you could really hit a note hard, but you pulled back (and I don't think it's compression either).

On Guad...
I liked this one better. I liked the harmonies. The guitars had a TON of midrange, you might want to pull that back a bit. Or better yet retrack them. The drums on this one sounded "club music drums", which didn't fit the overall sound of the song.

There was a distinct lack of presence in the songs - kind of that far away sound. Really liked your guitart playing - very nice.

King Elvis - Kingwood is on the Northeast side of Houston. Close enough that we've been anexed for taxes.

TripleM - I'm going to re-do some of these, some others I've got and also the 15+ other tunes that are 80-90% done. I'll probably introduce them to the new band I just formed in the past few weeks. Getting other players involved can help me catch what I've been missing with song structure and dynamics. Thanks for the plug on the guitar work.

Man am I happy to be back in a band finally...
