i've been doing a lot of mixing lately, doing a lot of experimentation.
this song, i first recorded on the roland vs1880, i ripped wav files from the roland data backup discs and put into SONAR.
i've added some tracks, but this is a ground-up mix.

faders up, zero automation.

the only thing that makes this mix work, is the clean nature of the guitar parts, and the arrangment.

normally, i automate every single ride....
for example, instead of compressing a vocal into submission, i'll 'ride the fader' with an volume envelope, that i go into and tweak and tweak til i get all the automation dialed in.
but not on this one, there aren't even any mutes, i simply erased all the unnecessary data (silence between actual playing) and cleaned up all the tracks that way.

all of these guitar parts were done with a POD XT.
bass was thru a sansamp bass di.
keys are a casio keyboard, tweaked thru the pod.

i used my custom Williams Hybrid on this tune.

Wow. You always seem to me to be able to achieve remarkable clarity and separation, and this is no exception. What a great stereo spread here. Guitar parts all interlock in a cohesive rolling wave of riffage and licks.

Bass sounds super slick. Some of the cymbals stood out a bit too much maybe, but I dunno.

Did you find the vs to be a good unit? I just "upgraded" to a 6 year old vs 2400 and so far I love it. My early impressions are that it makes a great tracking device, but not so good with editing...nice job on this man :).

heatmiser-
thanks for listening!
the VS..... i loved my vs.
i had the 1880.
and you're right, and one of the main reasons i made the jump to SONAR.
the editing.

plus, my VS unit, would only save data in encrypted roland proprietary data.

so, fuck that. i want wavs, and i want wavs i can do anything i want to with, and easy.

so, now my 1880 collects dust, but i keep it for remote capture. it's great for that still. i have a special computer program developed by some guys over at the vs planet, that allows to rip wavs from the roland data.
then i dump it into sonar.

i just don't have that many projects left in the VS, and i've been recording directly into sonar for over 2 years now.

the cymbals....
well, when i did the drum machine, i made them hot, because the low end was so deep.
too deep.

lots of info going on below 50 hz.
on this mix, i eq'd a lot of that low end down, and tried to surgically reduce at 8khz to mellow out that hi hat sizzle, but it's kinda that genre, you know? it's almost like a hip hop beat, so i kinda feel like i have to leave the hi end sizzle.
not my norm, but this whole song is a bit of a departure for me anyway.

the 2400 is easier to edit in, than my 1880 is...

but sonar just blows them both away.

This is truly rarified funk. Clarity and separation is outstanding. What I'm really diggin is the growl you've managed to get on a really cool bass line. How'd you do it? Oh, nevermind. Just re-read your post and saw the sansamp DI. What bass, what amp?

GUITAR ZERO
thanks man.
glad you dig it.

no amp, just direct into the sansamp bass di.

out of that, into a DBX MC-6 compressor.

i used my Carvin LB70 active bass, and played with my fingers.

sometimes i'll use JUST the sansamp, sometimes i'll blend it with a second signal direct into a mic pre, sometimes i'll split the signal and put it thru my mesa boogie guitar head, for that midrange drive, and then blend those two signals together....

This I could call a master piece though I don't normally listen to this type of music. Only the ride was too loud at times. Extremely cool bass lines and guitars.

Thanks for the info. Pretty cheap little box. May have to pick one up.

JOZA
thanks for the kind words.
yep, the cymbal work, i just mixed hotter than usual, to make up for the low end density.
felt like i needed a balance.
maybe i'll tweak the high end back down a bit, eh?
appreciate the listen

the sansamp is great.
look into it.
coolest thing- the parallel output.
you can send a clean unaffected signal to a 2nd end source- be it amp, direct, mic pre, whatever.
