New track from new sound guy - thoughts/comments/insults please

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to the audio recording and mixing game so if anyone could give me suggestions or advice or anything then I'd really appreciate it!

The track is 'Ascension' on thomlambertaudio.moonfruit.com under the 'music portfolio' heading.

I've already been advised to limit the hard panning on the intro guitar, which I will do!

I'm aware that the drums are not great, they were done using Addictive Drums VST, as I dont really have the capacity or equipment to record live drums at the moment.

The song is there. All parts are there. Watch the meters cause there is some clipping in the intro. The overall sound of the mix is very bright and harsh. Did you use a mastering program like ozone? It sounds to me like the overall mix was eqed too bright. Soften up some of the sounds and eq for a little warmth. Addictive drums can be a great program with the right treatment. I think they sound very natural compared to ezdrummers already processed right out of the box sound. You can obviously put a song together so now you just need to work on the sounds so they are pleasing to the ears. Which is probably the hardest part of writing/recording a song. Im still learning a lot but this site has helped a ton to get me that much closer to a great mix.
 
I also noticed a lot of clipping in the intro. I quite liked the bright sounding guitars, seemed to fit well with the song. Although the vocals were quite nice, the actual lyrics didnt do anything for me, but thats probably just a subjective thing. I also use addictive drums and think they are awesome, your snare sound probably could be made to be a bit better, but I cant really say how, as I have trouble with drums as well.
 
After another listen i think that if you bring the drums and bass up in the mix it wouldn't sound so harsh. The rhythm guitar is a little harsh sounding and i think its the loudest thing in the mix so my ears went straight to it. It would sound better with it back in the mix a little IMO.
 
cheers for the advice guys. I will definitely have to have a look at that clipping and I see what you mean about the lack of warmth in the guitar sounds and they bring a bit of harshness. I shall go back to the drawing board! Thanks again for your input, I might well need it again after the next attempt...
