Well I got a DRS-1 from Phoenix Audio. Im diggin it so far. I'd like some feedback on this recording. Hows the tone overall? Im liking it a lot over the Drawmer 1960, I sold to get it. Every track except the drums were done with it. Something about this mix doesnt seem right to me. What is it?

Thanks
Justin

Zeke,

I have a 1.4 meg connection and everytime I go to stream from nowhere radio I get broken playback. Very irritating. My link is streamable. Just copy the link location and paste it to the player.

Thanks,
Justin

Can you say pan?

My call on this is that acoustic. Move it off to one side or halfway between the center and right speaker. It's also too muddy in the midrange(acoustic guitar). I would move the electric to the opposite side. Everything is too much middle centered. If you move some of that stuff out of the middle things would clear up. Not far right and left mind you, just out of the middle.

The music, guitar sounds, vocal, bass and drums are all great. Except for the kick, it kind of disappears because its not set in the right freq range. Volume of the kick is fine. I would have worked the 60-100 range with the kick and bass for just a little more umpf. I'm running nearfields so maybe your kick is there but I had a hard time hearing it.

Middleman,

Ya I think I gutted too much low out of the kick. Ill fix that. The reason I left the acoustic so centered was because I had the electrics panned real hard. Ill try and move it.

Thanks,
Justin

I'd say your new toy sounds great. How much are those?

Funny, I'm listening on headphones, so my perspective is different. I could hear the kick fine, maybe too loud! Sounded like it had some sort of processing on it which made seem sort of artificial sounding, too much ambience or overly EQ'd, not natural enough (the drums sound like very good samples). I don't like the snare sound either, but that's just my taste, I know it's very popular.

I agree about the panning in the verse. The acoustic (which sounded thin to me on headphones, like you cut too much low end) and the electric sounded just left of center, then that electric comes in on the right, which is kind of cool, but the balance seems strange. I agree to pan the 2 guitars like Middleman says, then maybe put a short delay on that electric stab on the opposite side to balance it out.

The snare gets lost in the chorus. And it sounds like it's panned just right of center. I don't know, but I like things balanced I guess.

The vocalist is real good. I don't really like the song, but that's just my taste, too! :D

Keep in mind I don't know what I'm talking about!

Macle,

Thanks for the feedback. I dont normally like that snare sound either. I was experimenting. Im working on remixing already. Ill tell my mom you like my voice, she'll be proud. By the way. What is your taste in music?

Thanks
Justin

Hi Justin,
Oops :o , I didn't realize this was you doing the music yourself, I thought you were recording a band in your studio or something. Don't know what I was thinking, I normally wouldn't say that about someone's song (I apologize!!). As far as the style of music I like, I really like all styles. It wasn't that the song isn't good, it just didn't strike me for some reason. And yes, tell your mom, you've got a great voice.

Macle

Macle,

No Problem! Ive been at this a long time. It didnt even phaze me. Theres a lot of styles I like and dont like, but I still like to give recording feedback regardless. I asked what type of music you liked because Im curious If you liked my voice. what style could you hear me doing? I do need to give mom a call :)

Thanks,
Justin

Well, I could hear you doing what you're doing, which to me seems like alternative rock on the melodic side. But you could do different styles, you've got a very "good" voice, if you know what I mean. You could probably do real heavy pop or country pop, or whatever they call it, if you wanted. But I'd say continue doing the style you're doing.

Tell your mom, macle says "hi"!
