Hey, I just started to take up an interest in something that has been my self passion for my entire life: singing!
Up until recently I have been to embarrassed to take my talent any further.
Where should I start out, I would like to eventually write my own songs but right now I dont have the recording or means to do so.. what I do have though is a voice.

Where should I start, should I write my own stuff first or should I go to open mics and karaoke or whatever and start out with covers? How did some of you start out? I just need to figure all this out because I have two kids, this is a necessity for me to get my foot in the door. Thanks!!

Do you play an instrument Tony?

Open mics on my side of the world are for people who play an instrument and sing - either originals or interpretations of covers - and the instrument is usually, but not always, an acoustic guitar.

Not much point having a voice if you don't have anything to sing...

You don't have to have the ability to record to write songs.

I play a little bit of guitar, I guess I would need to find a band or something that needs vocals I guess. Its just overwhelming to figure out how to start and where to start.

According to your other post, you're 21... you have time.

Just start. Everything depends upon what you want to do. And you don't need to have it all nutted out just yet...

This may sound hokey, but- Join a choir. It doesn't matter whether it's in school, or church, a community college, a community center, or whatever. You'll get free voice coaching, begin to understand written music if you don't already. You'll meet lots of singers, and you'll be exposed to music you would never sing otherwise. I met one of my doo-wops that way. Surprisingly, If you can deal with Madrigals, oddly enough, it makes it easier to sing The Who.-Richie

It doesn't take too long to learn to sing along with guitar - just play simple rhythm and chords - write some songs
I can't sing other peoples songs when I play guitar for some reason - but if I write it I can sing it fine...
this works out well as I do not ever plan on playing a cover song.

In my opinion, you should definitely write your own songs. And given that you play a little guitar, I'd say this is also the time to plunge headlong in that direction also. And Richie's advice to try and join a choir is pretty sound because it'll help you with discipline and focus.
But I can't emphasize how crucial it is to write your own stuff. Whether you have the means to record it isn't an issue. When I first started writing songs, I didn't record them. I just memorized them. Anyway, a cheap little dictaphone would enable you to jot your song ideas down.
Sing, keep singing by all means ~ it's obviously your passion. But write your own songs and give that which is your passion both the stage and the framework in which to project and shine.

Or something like that.

not sure where you are, but most places where there is a healthy music scene, local bands advertise for singers or singers advertise for bands. Folk clubs can also be a good place to meet solo muso's. Sit down and work out wht you want to sing, maybe get some lessons, learn an instrument all of this will help with your cv, I've been lucky to have been in bands for the last 30 years.
Luck
