hello, im new to all this so please bare with me. just managed to get my hands on a laptop and i am now trying to make my own mix cds. i have done this before on an older laptop but this new one just doesnt want to work :(. Every mix i make the sound seems to be going louder then quiter quite randomly and frequently. Im using the mic in input (on my laptop), which is connected directly into my mixer (djm500) (normal double phono to a single headphone jack into the mic input) from the booth out monitor and i have also tried the main output but both seem to do the same thing. I have tried using various software to record my mixes including audacity but at the moment im using the lp to cd conversion wizard on Nero 6 (which isnt very good but i have no money to buy some thing decent). Although this laptop is quite good i will admit i think the problem may be the sound card (which is poo). Im not touching the levels on my mixer when playing and the levels on the laptop input when they come up are ok (green). Any ideas???

a) mic-in is a no-no; it has a crappy preamp designed for those $3 stick mics used for gaming. Use the line-in.

b) you NEED a better soundcard. The built-ins are NEVER any good for music.
Here's a good starter guide and recomendations:

Now my standard newbie links:

Immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio:
Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15

(Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief)

Good Newbie guide that also explains all the basics:
