New to the Digital Way

Hi. Been on here for quite some time and researching. Not new to recording but new to using a DAW. Have an iMac with Logic Pro X and Final Cut. Sorta figured out GarageBand so want to move to something more. Hoping to learn more from here.

This is a good place to learn. One thing to get your head around is the different metering. In analog, 0dBVU was the target. In digital, 0dBFS is the absolute top of the scale. If you hit that you're clipping. The analog 0 translates to about -18dBFS in digital.

Hi Recordex and welcome. A lot of folks new to digital audio spend a lot of time worrying about which hardware to get, especially the Audio Interface? IMHO don't, just buy a fairly basic AI for now.
AIs are 'defined' largely by input count (and to a degree output count) so decide on the number of tracks you might need to record simultaneously and shop accordingly. Note, not all inputs need to be microphone capable. If say you had a synth keyboard that could go into one or two 'line' inputs. So could a 'pedal assisted electric guitar'.

The "two mics plus two line inputs AI is very common and a much more versatile device than the basic 'two in two out' jobs. And NEVER buy an interface with only ONE mic input! (MIDI ports are very useful as well)

Dave.
