So glad to have found this forum - I have been hung up on some very basic issues.
Basically, I am looking for a USB mic where I could plug it into my laptop and sing into it without it amplifying in the room (because I am in an apartment building and very shy). I would like to be able to produce Ween-like vocal effects but hear them only through the headphones as I'm recording. I have samples that I made in Mario Paint Composer but I am not sure how to export them into some kind of editing software because the folder shows that they are saved as 'Text Documents'. I have tried copying the songs into a folder on another computer where I had installed Mario Paint Composer and could not play the songs. Therefore, my guess is that to make samples I would have to play the tracks and record at the same time, or is there a device I would connect and then play the song and it would record directly to that?
NUTSHELL: I just want to be able to record vocal tracks directly into my computer with live vocal distortion, then take samples from Mario Paint Composer and put them into some kind of software where I could mix the two together, and then export the tracks or be able to burn them to a CD. Also, would a USB mic be able to record interesting other sounds, like the sound of boots walking across a floor? Because I have a song that needs a sample of that. Could I walk around with the mic connected to my laptop and record trains or whatnot or is that completely insane?
Sorry to be such a complete noob, but I have been hung up on this question forever. It is the step between what I'm doing now and being able to call myself a musician.
PS: Don't laugh, I've done some very interesting things with Mario Paint Composer.
