New to Recording/Editing/Mixing with Windows

I just recently got a new computer and was wondering what sort of programs people had used and would recommend for a computer with Windows XP Professional. I am planning on recording guitar, bass, keyboard (I have the roland fantom-s, so I can plug it into the comp with a USB cable), and possibly vocals, so any help that more experienced musicians out there might have would be greatly appreciated. Also, any tips on adapters for a guitar jack into a computer are needed. Thanks for your time.

It would help if you stated your budget and the type of soundcard you have. Recording software goes from free to several thousands of dollars. For recording vocals and guitar you are going to be needing preamps to bring the signal up to line lvl before going into the computer, so forget the adapter idea for the guitar.
