Sorry, had to leave and just got back. Anyway, no process is cut and dried and these are mighty large steps with several sub-steps to each, but it is how I tackle (roughly) my recording/mixing. The steps are not necessarily always in the same order and some things get moved around and done multiple times, at times. Getting reverb to sound right in the mix can sometimes be done well in the second step, and sometimes it's a lot more obvious after leveling. Pan and reverb/echo will give instruments placing in three
dimensions on your stereo. Done well, you can place your instruments left to right with the pan, and front to back with verb and echo. Find a good video on these topics as well, because there are a lot of subtle nuances to this phase.
Lastly, nothing is set in stone. If you find your remixing at the end and realize that a drum part needs to be done over, don't neglect it. Good
tracks come from meticulous habits. You'll figure out how to do it your way over time, but maybe you should keep a journal or a log of the things you figure out. I know that sometimes something I did yesterday is impossible today an wish I had written out the process.
I realize this is over-simplified, but I just want you to get comfortable and have fun with the process. If you get frustrated, grab a sandwich or something and come back. Don't work angry...the extra blood flow actually deters your hearing abilities.
