I am running cubase le 5 i got with an alesis i02

i run my guitars with a tone from pod farm2

and i use midi drums with ez drummer

anyway I just started recording covers to get the hang of the actual recording process and now i need to know what i need to do when it gets down to mixing editing and mastering and so on

Here are my steps:
First you need to get the performance spot on (or as close as makes you comfortable). Get your fx and such all put together.
Then get your mix close (adjust the sliders in your DAW) till it sounds pretty good most of the time.
Then you come to the EQ portion of our program. Adjust the EQ of each instrument to make it sound better in the mix (see if you can find an instructional video on youtube for subtractive EQ). THis keeps the bass drum from killing the bass, and the cymbal crashes from killing your vocals, etc.
Now either automate your knobs or sit down with your razor tool to get the volumes sounding right through each measure. (the time consuming part). Google sidechaining for parts that don't come out in the front like they should)
Now start listening to each track soloed to get your compression set for each track (it's right when it sounds right).
Remix till the tracks all sit at the right volumes.
Bake at 350 for 45 minutes...oolps, wrong forum.
Hope this gives you a spot to start. There will be other schools of thought of course.

Could you be any more vague?

Sorry, had to leave and just got back. Anyway, no process is cut and dried and these are mighty large steps with several sub-steps to each, but it is how I tackle (roughly) my recording/mixing. The steps are not necessarily always in the same order and some things get moved around and done multiple times, at times. Getting reverb to sound right in the mix can sometimes be done well in the second step, and sometimes it's a lot more obvious after leveling. Pan and reverb/echo will give instruments placing in three dimensions on your stereo. Done well, you can place your instruments left to right with the pan, and front to back with verb and echo. Find a good video on these topics as well, because there are a lot of subtle nuances to this phase.
Lastly, nothing is set in stone. If you find your remixing at the end and realize that a drum part needs to be done over, don't neglect it. Good tracks come from meticulous habits. You'll figure out how to do it your way over time, but maybe you should keep a journal or a log of the things you figure out. I know that sometimes something I did yesterday is impossible today an wish I had written out the process.
I realize this is over-simplified, but I just want you to get comfortable and have fun with the process. If you get frustrated, grab a sandwich or something and come back. Don't work angry...the extra blood flow actually deters your hearing abilities.

Armistice, I think (or hope) he was looking for an outline. I'm doing the best I can, but it's up to him to hit the walls and ask how to get over them. :thumbs up:

thank you Broken_H. Yes i was looking for a rough outline and everything you are giving me is perfect info i can do the research myself or if i get stuck post in here again but i do appreciate it Broken ive been watching videos on subtractive eq since i read that..

Superb advice ! Write it down unless you have a photographic memory.
And even if you have, you soon won't !

Etch this on your computer or recording machine. But most importantly on your mind.

LOL - I see my main job around here as being to be the first wall Broken_H - the one with "REFINE YOUR QUESTION" written on it..:laughings:

Cool. Honestly, between my first post and finishing post I had about a two hour gap while we were at Bible study and I wasn't quite in tune. Sorry to tunnel under your wall :laughings:
