I have Yamaha PSR-290 keyboard with the MIDI In/Out cable connected to the computer. I also have Reason and Cubase SX on my hard drive.

What I want to do is that the programs playback in real time when I play the notes on my keyboard. I changed my keyboard to "PC Mode," and tried every possible way to set up the ports, channels etc.

I can't just seem to figure out why wouldn't the programs playback. I see everyone else's working fine. I must be doing something wrong?

Can someone please help?

I'm afraid I don't really understand what you're trying to do.

Are you trying to play back a MIDI file in one of your programs and have it trigger the sounds in your PSR-290?

The way you worded the question makes it sound like you want to play the keyboard and hear the sounds from it. That's not a MIDI issue and it doesn't have anything to do with the software programs you have. If that's what you want, then it's a question about audio connections, I think.

Can you please try to explain what you are trying to do more clearly for us?

Thanks.

Yes, that's exactly what I want to do. But I don't think there's problem with audio connections. I checked and it's working fine.

When I installed the Yamaha driver, which came with the midi cable, it installed 2 inputs(or outputs or both?) on my hard drive. One of them is Yamaha In/Out, and the other one is MPU-401, which I'm not too sure what it is.

Maybe it's a port/channel problem? or it could be that I chose the wrong input on the software. Any ideas?

I must be dense.

If you want to play the keyboard and hear the sounds, why do you need a computer? It's got it's own speakers even!

I know I'm not understanding what you're asking.

Like, the ultimate goal is so that I can record what I play from my keyboard. When I play on my keyboard, I want Reason to record what I'm playing, then maybe I can add some FX and edit.

I never use Reason, and from my very very limited knowledge about Reason, it's not actualy audio recording program. It's more softsynthesizer / sample player application that acts like sound generator. You can play your MIDI controller (Yamaha PSR) connected to computer, and Reason will make the sound. More or less. So, if you want to record your performance (whether as Audio or MIDI), you must fire up your Cubase. From this point, I assume you understand the difference between audio and MIDI data.

Okay... I don't use Cubase either but Sonar. So, bear with me... but hey... MIDI sequencer is similiar. All you have to do is insert MIDI track, assign it's input port to Yamaha, and it's output port to Reason. Set to channel 1 (for example), and assign bank - patches to use. I don't know how to do that in detail, just try it and figure out yourself. If you can hear notes while you press keys on your PSR keyboard, then you're on. Arm the track and record it as MIDI data. You can change it's bank and sound later after you record it. Post here later...
