New to digital recording-need advice

Okay people...I'm new to recording on my computer. I wonder if y'all have some input or advice on getting a soundcard with maybe two 1/4 inch jacks. I'm like anyone else-I want the best bang for the buck. But since I don't know these items or manufacturers well enough, I have no idea of a good place to start. Anybody have any ideas?

The Echo Mia is two balanced 1/4" analog inputs and SPDIF for under $200. Great deal. M-audio Terratec and others make comparable cards, just stay away from the game cards.

but is there a sound card similar to the one asked about, but with four inputs and must work with a g4 laptop?
