New to Bass, and I have some questions.

I play a strat, but to round out the studio, I need to get a bass and learn to play it. The reviews for the mexican made Fender Jazz basses have been ok cept for the bridge. Would a Badass II do the trick, is it worth it?

Should I just jump right into a 5 string or will a 4 string do? (rock in general)
I want somthing that will last.

I have up to $600.
 
I wouldn't go a 5 string, I'm too traditional for that. I just recently bought a bass for the same reasons you sound like you are. I ended up getting a Fender Squire Bronco Bass. Just a cheap mid size bass, but it's fun to play and to finally have some boom in some of my songs.

For your money, just try to get a combination of name, playability, sound and all that. You'll have to get out and play them I suppose
 
The Mex Jazz isn't bad at all for the money. I almost sprung for it, but decided to go ahead and get the American model. I'm assuming you're already familiar with the fretboard layout, so it will probably be easier for you to relate to a 4-string model in learning to play it.

For 600 and under, the Geddy Lee model (Japanese made) comes with a BassAss II bridge. You should be able to score one for less used.

As a guitarist myself, the neck was really easy to adjust to. Much easier than a P style.
 
The Mexi jazz basses are fine. The Badass bridges are nice. The Badass is much heavier and will increase sustain, which will give you a different tone. Nothing wrong with it, but it is definitely a different sound. If you want to stick with a more "traditional tone" then find something with less mass. But I would agree that the stock bridge really needs to go.
