Greetings all

I just recently decided (after many many months) to go digital for recording. I have never recorded anything before in my life but have been in many studios to record and watch others record. Anyways, i bought a Fostex FD-4 just for my basement. My question is how do i do basic recording. Or what is the best way to use this thing. There are many other message boards out there but no one seems to want to help me. I am new to all of this and am just dying to take the first step in home recording (that eing to actually record something). Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Neil

Neil, I don't know squat about these smaller digital recorders. I barely know squat about larger ones. I did just look at one on ebay though, and it appears to have four inputs and two outputs each with eq. At 16 bit it's not going to be of the highest quality available, but it seems like a good basic tool for learning on.
Did you get some kind of zip drive to download to or can you download to your computer? I don't know what kind of mic's you've got, but it appears that you may need some kind of preamp to power them.
Explain a little bit about what you'ld like to be able to record; vox, guitar, midi, ect., and what other equipment you have such as mic's, keyboard, ect..

Good luck and welcome.

What's up Neil. :)

Let us know what EXACTLY what equipment you have.

Let us know the exact specs on your computer (if you're going to incorporate it in your music production).

Let us know what kind of music you are trying to create.

:)

We will be happy to help you, but we need a little more info. :)

My first suggestion, is to read anything that came with the gear you already have, then go to the threads on this BBS that pertain to things you are gonna be doin, IE: guitars, keyboards, drums, or?? then read a bit on the other threads that have to do with mixing, soundcards, and other things that relate to what you want to do.....

Then when you feel a little more confident about the how-to, just go for it, see what you can come up with.....

You can always count on the folks here to give you advice on improvements, changes, or whatever you need..... if you want to, you can post your trials as MP3s, and have the 'experts' here tell you what you did right, or what you did wrong.

The best teacher is always gonna be 'Hands on' and the best way to get to know your gear (beyond the manuals) is to try out the stuff with your own 'Dream' music..... If you are totally confused, just read some more, and ask more questions.....

good luck..!!
