New here to actives...i have been tinkering with passives at home for years...Sound Dynamics RTS-3s, Magnepans MMGs. I have a taste for 4-5 piece acoustic jazz and alternative type music. I also do video post production at work, as these speakers may be swapped between home and work. At home i would be listening maybe 6-7 ft away, while at work i am 2-5 ft away.

I don't even know if actives would work in my home listening environment, but this is something i am interested in exploring. I prefer tamed highs and expansive mids. The lower the bass the better, but i don't have excessive expectations considering the budget. I know actives are supposed to be "colorless" and neutral, but i still read reviews where frequency characteristics are still distinguished from speaker to speaker. That's why i mention my preferences.

The speakers i have looked into are:

Mackie MR8
Adam A5
KRK RP8
Event TR8

I have read some quality issues in regards to KRKs. More worrying is the 1 years warranty. Any experience with workmanship with KRKs?

I could be persuaded to go for the Adam A7s or Mackie 624s if i were led to believe they were THAT much better than what i have listed.

Also, how much of a drop-off are the HRs to the MRs in Mackies?

I wish more speakers would have volume control on the front. Also, a headphone output would be nice, but i only see M-Audio with that feature and they don't get too good reviews, compared to what i have listed.

Anyways, first post here. Look forward to healthy exchanges!

I have a pair of Event TR5s and they are great. My only second thought is that I could use more low end information from them. So - If I were to do it again, I'd get the TR8s. Hope that helps.

:D Yo Gnostic:

A while back, I had some KRK passives w/8" woofers; they did a nice job. Then, I got the Event SP 8" woofers; they are still plugged into my studio. But, the ADAM A7s which were my first active pair of monitors are very good.

IMHO I don't think you'd have to upgrade from the A7s for a LONG time. The A7 monitors will run 999 pezzutos with few exceptions. You should be able to get FREE shipping if YOU ASK. Call the 800 numbers and someone will kick-in the shipping. I got my set from Full Compass. [Save the shipping boxes in case you want to trade off in the FAR future.]

Nice and clear sound from the A7s to help you set up your stereo tracks for CD burning.

BTW: Where is spring? It's raining again.
Green Hornet:rolleyes:

+1 on the A7's. That's what I would have bought if only I'd had a few more pezzutos.

 Yo G-Tar ZERO:I'm glad somebody also recognizes the "PEZZUTO" equation.Over the years I've bought many things; however, I cannot remember buying a German made product that wasn't class A.* I bought this little kiddy-car once for one of my nephews and thought I needed help in its assembly; but the car was a German product and the "MANUAL" was very, very clear.* I had it assembled in less that the time it took my brother to get to my crib. For sure, there are many other products that are well made by various entities.* I have not really messed with the "dials" on the A7s; just left them straight up and have enjoyed burning CDs mixed via 7s.* Keep those "strings" humming.Green Hornet:rolleyes:
