If you are looking for a cheap way to upgrade performance and you use an AMD Athlon 700mhz CPU all the way up to a xp2000(and possibly DDR already too) then check into the following mobo and hard drives... less than $200 total for the upgrade...
Abit KR7A-raid or KR7A-133R... super solid, 266mhz DDR ram, very overclockable, and uses the newer ata133 transfer rates, which means more, faster info in and out of your hard drive. Hopefully more tracks, faster loading, faster bootup.
Mobo $108 +/- 5%
Maxtor 40gb ata133 hardrives $85 +/- 5%
Less than $200 for better stability than most boards prior to this, and better performance, at least in theory.
Continue to use your other stuff if it suits you fine.(vid cards, case, power supply, CPU, sound cards, etc)
Check out this info on the mobo and its competitors in a shootout, and check out the winner... http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1578

If you happen to need DDR, 256mb of DDR2100 at crucial.com for $75... this still leaves your upgrade at less than $275 and you can still use your current processor and whatever else til you are ready to upgrade that also. The way DAWS eat resources, you can never get enough. This will help some.
Just babbling, thinking out loud really, thought I'd share a little with everyone.
After this upgrade, wait around for the Athlon XP 1800 and up to come down to about $100 (2 months from now) and pow... kick ass sytem.
Peace.

FS UK prices are hideous! that little lot would set you back about £300 ($500 ish)

Is there any site that has these prices and are willing to ship to the UK??

cheers
