Hello, I just acquired a Tascam 246 that was being discarded from an AV studio (as it just so happens, I was in the market for a 4-track). I didn't expect much from it as it was literally handed over to me, but the power button works fine and it's actually in pretty decent condition. My brother has a Tascam 414 MKII and that's what I normally record on, so I took one of my masters and popped it into the 246 just to test it out. This is where the fun started...

First I noticed that I had no audio output on playback, and worse, the play button seemed to double as a fast-forward. I did some research on the forums (I'm very new to home recording, by the way, I know how to use my brother's MKII but that's about it) and found other posts about belt issues.

Upon removing the back cover, I found the capstan belt to be a gummy mess, broken in two places, and wadded up around the larger of its two wheels. The control belt is a little loose, but is still around both of its two wheels. I know that I will have to replace the capstan belt (and most likely the control belt as well) but before I go ordering, is this likely to fix my problems?

As I said before, everything else seems to be in working order from what I can tell, but I won't know if I have audio until I actually have a tape that plays correctly in the deck. Also, the unit is in VERY good condition, and I know that it was taken care of, as it was in a college AV studio. Can anyone think of anything else that MAY be wrong with it, just so I don't get my hopes up, in case the belts are not the issue? I would appreciate any input I can get.

this is the EXACT same problem i had a couple of weeks ago. Dont worry about the play button acting as a second fast forward thats only because the lack of pull from the capstan belt(in my case). order a new belt and just replace it and youre good to go. theyre about 13 dollars when you just call and order them directly from tascam. hope you have fun with your machine

That's just what I wanted to hear, and hopefully it works. I'm calling Tascam Parts as we speak. Going to get a capstan and control belt just to make sure I cover all my bases. Thanks for the input!

I just got the new belts in the mail yesterday/today (Tuesday Aug. 5) and put them on. This fixed the issue and the machine works PERFECTLY with the exception of a short in one of the monitoring volume knobs (channel 2). A little wiggling around gets it working, however, so I am extremely impressed with this beauty, especially given its age. Thanks for the input johnbilben. A demo has already been recorded on it, as of about 5 minutes ago. :D

wow!...well done!..Been a long time since I owned my Teac 246....still fond memories of the time I unwrapped and used it, and the people I knew back then.

I actually have a song I recorded 21 years ago on that machine, posted on my soundsick site....it's..umm..interesting!

I always found that my better recordings were in high-speed mode plus full 'fast' trim, and on a BASF 60 minute chrome cassette !!!

I'd love to hear your stuff!
