My God Has Horns
I'm looking at buying a new mic for my small in home studio. I don't want t spend a shit ton of money but I don't want a piece of shit either. I do a lot of death metal vocals (think Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Bloodbath, etc.) and we record heavily distorted death metal guitar as well. I want a mic that I can use for both vocals and instruments. I've been looking at the MXL 990 Condenser. It's inexpensive and it's got really good reviews but I'm wondering if this mic, or a condenser is even what I'm looking for. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

The old MXL 990 mics were usable microphones, the new ones are rubbish..

Recording death metal vocals (I don't have any experience on death metal, but it's allot of screaming isn't it?) is something for the Shure SM58 if you want to go inexpensive. Recording heavily distorted death metal guitars is more something for the Shure SM57,. And since (according to the Shure website), the Shure SM58 = SM57 with the head screwed on your best bet is the Shure SM58, if you want to record vocals leave the head on, if you want to record the guitar screw the head off.

Not sure what a shit load of money is to you, but for both instrument and vocals I can recommend the Sennheiser 441.

Ten combinations of settings, it's rugged (but I wouldn't drop it nose-first), and sounds like a million bucks, but won't cost you that.

If you shop around and watch the auctions you can get one used for anywhere from $350-$500. New is rock bottom at $729 from an authorized dealer. Average is around $780, retail is $900+ and MSRP is $1300.

This is a great all around dynamic mic for multiple uses. You don't have to use a condensor mic to make great recordings. A nice pre- helps though.

What about this one?

Have you looked at the Shure SM7B? It is a goto mic for a lot of metal and death metal vocalists. It would also work very well on guitar. And they are reasonably priced. I have used the SM7B for a vocal mic on large variety of projects and I am always pleased with the results! The Sennhieser 441 is a rock solid mic as well!

Cheers,
Nicholas
