Hello,

What a great forum this is, I've found a stunning amount of information.

I'm building a studio that will be used for both recording and rehearsal. I have a windowless, detached garage, 18' x 20', built in the following manner:

Vinyl siding
Tyvek housewrap
1/2 OSB sheathing
2" closed cell foam insulation (sprayed on by the builder)
1 layer 5/8" sheetrock.

I'm proposing adding another layer of 5/8" rock to the existing wall. Then building a room within a room, about 8" from the current walls and ceiling, filling the stud cavity with insulation and adding 2 layers of 5/8" rock (new ceiling as well).

Does this plan seem reasonable in accomplishing my goals of both recording and rehearsing?

Thanks

Question. Do you need to keep sound in or to keep outside noise from coming in? And neither of these issues have to do how the final space inside will "sound". I did the room in a room thing here to keep from bothering my neighbors and then had to treat the inside walls/ceiling to tame how the room itself sounded.

Thanks for the reply!

Most important is to not bother the neighbors, which the closest are about 40 feet away. I intend to treat the inside once I'm finished but want to ensure my construction efforts of the room-in-a-room would be adequate.

Did your room-in-a-room do the trick?

Thanks

Very much so. I have a cinder block basement and I came out two inches and built standard studded walls. The wall between the control room and the studio is a double stagered stud wall. I have two layers of 5/8" dry wall on the walls and the ceiling is dry wall with a layer of ox board (like chip board) over that. I've never had a neighbor complain in the ten years since I built it.
