think McFly...think

It sounds kinda like old Rush to me...The band is tite!! I takes a long time to get to the singing though but I like it. I think that songs today are just too damn short anyway...good stuff

visions:
the drums sound awesome...really awesome..
that clean guitar on the right ear sounds a little "lo-fi", or maybe just wierd,....whatever the case though, i dont really like it...ha.. perhaps change the tone setting on the amp and retry that? - unless you like it ofcourse.
the distorted guitar is a little funky as well it think. maybe try some other ways of micing?
lastly - maybe too much of a "stereo" mix...try not panning HARD right/left so much
oh yeah, and on that section at about 2:30ish - etc. - the left ear sounds like mass clipping/static sound.
vox are cool.

how did you record everything? (equipment, mics on what, etc.)

Hey thanks for the critiques guys...both the good and the bad.
Like I said in my first post...It was done on PTLE with a digi-001. The Sound comes from ALOT of EQing and some compression.
Of course we werent going for the "Radio" or "Commercial" sound. If you really want to know how I got a certain sound you have to be more specific.
I really want comments on the overall mix and sound as well as the songwriting...I know the songwriting style might not be everyones cup of tea but the songs do grow on ya...

cool im listening to waterfalls rght now......that is a killer drum sound!!!...nice change......odd time...yeah....!...vocals????...come on sing it........i am........lol..fan-fuckin-rush-tastic.....im on lo-fi..so when the heavy guitars kick in it gets alittle blurry.....change around 2:40 or so ..very nice....man THIS NEEDS VOCALS........shit hire someone.....just find a way...!!..if this is your thing style wise(and it should be)..lol..then listen to dream theatre if you havent already....like rush if they.all went to college to study how to rock...i dont hoever care for the singer in that band .....definately check them out....

What a ride. That is a very complex piece of writing, and it would take me about 3000 years to record it. (Visions).

First, I like. Bass player is not shy on either Visions or Waterfalls, but it works.

To me, both mixes are missing something that I can't put my finger on. But I feel like if I hit the "LOUDNESS" button, they'd sound great...so I'm thinking they're both kinda' "middy." I personally think the guitar tones are great, and I'm a freak for hard panning...EVERYTHING. But it's just missing some "shine" in the individual tracks...(I've always wanted to say that, even though I don't have a clue what it means or how to fix it). It sounds like you know what you're doing.

How do YOU think they sound?

Writing = cool, engaging, non-repetetive (for the most part...there was a section in Visions about a minute in that went on a bit...). SOLID.

Arrangement - Kicks my ass.

Sound - Missing something???

:D

Chrisharris...
thank you for your specific likes and dislikes...
I think you nailed it when you said that there was something missing...I just dont know what. Maybe they all need more vocal content.
"I" personally think the overall mixes are very clean and tight. And thats the sound I was going for. I just wanted to know if there were some obvious flaws in the mix or EQ that I was missing. I have listened to these songs a thousand times.

Hey I know that Nighttime Jammie Jammers is really long but I would like some feed back on that one too. Just give it a try...
Again I am looking for any obvious things that I am missing with these songs.
Thanks guys.

vision's

very cool song!!! grooves real well, but the distorted guitar ?? man i don't know. i think it need's to be more in the center, and the volume dropped imho.

but i loved the song!!!

peace

Hey guys thanks for your critiques on Visions and waterfalls...
I know that Nighttime Jammie Jammers is really long but if I could get some responses on that one too. Just give it a quick listen.
You guys have been very informative so far...But just try Nighttime Jammie Jammers
Thanks

oh yeah...

I listened yesterday to the Jam thing, and I just couldn't think of anything constructive to type. Like, for example, the drums have that "Van Morrison" kinda' in the background, but not in a volume is too low kind of way.

Impressive for an improv. I would not leave a club if you played this.

I do think the kick's got too much low end, but that's about the only EQ thing my feeble hillbilly brain can muster.

Sorry.

Hey...I just noticed I have one star out of five. Does that mean that you guys think my stuff sucks or am I reading it wrong?

i can't answer about the stars......who knows.....as for your songs, i'm not a huge fan of the genre, but i'm sure a lot of people would really like them..........you sound extremely proficient at your instruments........try adding some vocals, that could help kick it up a notch

The star thing...it means that ONE person thought your stuff, or the thread itself, or the recording, or your name or something was sub-par. It's kinda fuzzy...Wasn't me.

Have some more stars.

Listened to Visions. As far as personal taste, I thought it was ok - not great/not bad. As far as complexity, very intricate. Nice job. I loved the bass line. Drums were terrific.

I look at this song has having 3 sections. The first and last were instrumental, and a vocal section sandwiched in between. It's a bit more intricate than that - I know. But I liked the first two most. Vocally, I thought there was nice melody and harmony there. A couple of execution issues here and there (pitch, bobbles). But still nice. I had a bit of trouble making the vocals out - buried just a bit.

One guitar really stared crackling at around 2:30. And it's really noticable when it goes away at the begining of the 3rd section. I thought certain sections got a bit overdone. The 3rd section went on longer than I thought it needed to go.

Overall thought, I'd say nice job.

I like your style, reminds me of earlier Yes. Stuff sounds good to me. Drums are great, though I think I'd like to hear the snare be a bit more powerful. Levels seem good, it's almost like the snare is too clean. Could be the system I'm listening on. Anywho, good job, keep it up :)
