Here is a 1st mix of a recording I did for my band. The song's called "Scare the Night". I'm just looking for some feedback. The mix isn't final yet, but this is generally it. Any tips to make it great? Anything any of you would re-track before finalizing the whole song? Thanks.

Oh yeah, it's a .wma, not an mp3, but I'm pretty sure both Winamp and Win media player can handle it.

I really like the off beat funky thing hook thing. Very good vocals. The mix is a little flat though. No air. I like a dark and round mix but this is too dark. I believe it's the drums in particular (the drummer kicks ass by the way).

Yeah, for a second mix I do need to let the drums brethe a little. I'll try backing off on the eq and compression.

1. i got 5 seconds of silence when i played the file. not sure if you were aware.

2. i like the song.

3. the vocals get buried in the mix a little. especially in the sections that lead into the chorus (2:03). Need to give them a little presence in the mix somehow. Someone else can tell you how to do that.

4. i like the rythm section. don't lose those guys. they are very tight.

5. maybe just open up the air in the mix a little. the whole thing lacks high end content.

6. the backing vocals are extremely tight.

not an engineer...

but I think that the mix sounds like it is coming from under a blanket...

meaning that if I have speakers at eye level, all of the meat of the music appears to hit me right at about my chin. I guess this would translate to compression maybe?

But the song is flavor, I like the arrangement and musical variations...

Yeah, it's still rough. That silence is where the drummer is clicking off the time. I had the master fader down for that.

The thing that kills us is that our bass player is about twice as good at guitar. We would really like to put him on guitar, but the drummer says he's never locked in with a bass player quite like that. The rest of us agree, so he stays on bass. :) Talented guy.

Yeah, I think I need to tear the whole mix down and start over. I really forced a few things to keep the bass drum audible (severe eq/compression), and I think the sound as a whole suffered for it. Maybe re-tracking the accousitc guitars (the main thing that was masking the bass drum in the first place) and/or sound replacing the bass drum itself might help.

I'd agree that the drummer and bass player are both real good. Not my style however, but real good nonetheless.

The volume of the vocals varries considerably throughout. There are spots where he sings VERY soft, and spots where it's quite loud. It can get burried in the soft spots. The harmonies sound real smooth and are very tight.

I'm with Track Rat here....

Great singer & band in general. Friggin' excellent drummer!

I don't mind the softer bits in the vocals. I think it's a good effect. Mix sounds ok, but it indeed lacks (lots of) air. I almost thought: wow, these drums are really excellently programmed! :o Eek!

So it's mostly in the drums. Where's the high end? Listen to that snare...it sounds like a dick on a hat! Make the snare snappy and it will open up the whole mix, I'm pretty sure of that. :)
