Here is a tune that i have been working on the past few weeks. It doesn't have vocals yet, but it will. I just want to get some ideas about the mix. I am pretty happy with it but someone else may catch something i missed. It is kinda in the vein of Slayer, and Testament. Pretty fast, but has some groove as well. I appreciate any listens. It is called Tears Inside. Guitars done on Schecter, and Line 6, bass is an ESP, Drums are my Tama Set. Later

the drums sound canned? i'm not sure, but they don't feel like a live kit to me. the guitars seem a bit muddy too, a bit too much gain/low end maybe? overall cool stuff though. the effects on the background guitars(?) in the chugga-chugga parts are cool.

Great slobbering demon!

That sounds a lot like Slayer!

Huge sound...something is weird aboutt the drums though, It might be the encoding but the drums seem too sharp or something not mid rangey enough.

I'm only listening on 'phones. The faster double bass parts are too crowded. I would lower the kick a bit on those passages...not too much.

Where are the vocals!?

Thanks for the listen!

Hey thanks for the listen. The drums aren't a drum machine if that is what canned means. I trigger my drums, they are played live, but i don't mic them...so i think that might be what you are hearing(canned). I mic the cymbals, and trigger all of the drums. As far as the guitars being muddy...it is probably because i play in such a low tuning. B tuning, on a 6 string. I can maybe try and roll off some more of the lows, and throw up some more room mics for the drums. The vocals will be coming soon. I just wanted to get the music down and as close to perfect as i can before i proceed with them, as well as the mix. Yup, it is kinda Slayer-ish. Especially the double bass parts in the beginning. I love Slayer...Dave Lombardo is gonna be on the next album. I am pumped. But yes..there is a definate Slayer influence here. Anybody have suggestions on good room mics for adding a little air, and life to triggered drums. Thanks again

Ok, so that nails it down...

The kick in the fast passages is too constant, it has no dynamic variance between hits. One option is to actually change the volume of each one a bit a to emphasize or accent a beat and bring the tempo keeping kick beats down a bit.

A room mic might bring some air around the guitar sound.

Only have one kick drum...double pedal

In reguard to the kick, it was triggered from a single bass drum. I don't have a way to really change each kick sound. If i triggered 2 seperate bass drums then i could. but i really don't have that option. I could edit each individual kick sound, by say EQing every other one...but that would be tedious as all hell. I personaly want to liven up my toms and snare more than anything. Thanks for the idea. Maybe someday i will get another bass drum to add to my set but i am not sure yet. I am kinda into the compact sets with lots attatchments. Thanks again for the listen. If any other thoughts come to you that would help me improve this i would greatly appreciate them .

Oh Sweet Metal!!!!

YESSSS!!!!

METAL!!!!!!

This is cool shit dude. The bass drum is killing me though.Like too overdriven or something. The sound of it is cool but it sounds like maybe the mic you used was overdriven or not suited for the sound.I have very little drum recording experience so I can'tbe of much help. The song sounds great. The mix is fine, maybe more bass guitar and I don't mind the slightly muddy guitars. It's definately a chunky sound.Maybe back off the lows a bit,but not too much.Chunk Good.Sounds like some timing issues at 1:35 and 3:29,like it the guitars got faster or out of sync to keep in time with drums.Great riffage bro...heavyduty!!A little sloppy at 4:04...but I'm nit picking.Nothing that can't be buried in the mix. Can't wait to hear the vox!!!

Jus a thought on the drums. Would you get some swell and air if you stereo mic a clean and clear wide mix of the drums off a good set of playback speakers at about 6', and then eq that track as per taste and feed some of it back with the original?

This might sound stupid, but I was sittin here lookin at my speakers and thinkin about it.

Kickin' some ass on this, bro! Heavy shit....

Why not try running the whole mix through a single speaker in a large room with a good mic. That's one way they did 'verb way back before electronic/digital 'verbs. Only with a DAW you have the option of moving the track for pre-delay.

Could be just what you need to add a bit of "warmth" to this mix.

Thanks again...very helpful

Hey guys, Thanks for the ideas. I plan to try all of these to see if i can make it a little better. I agree the bass needs to come up a bit. I think if i roll off some of the guitars lows it will maybe come through a bit more. I have never tried micing the playback of a mix and adding it back into the mix. But it may be able to give it a bit more ambience. the bass drum was triggered like a imentioned before. but i can change that easily enough by re-triggering just the bass drum track in a loop configuration. Thanks for the comments. Any more before i go to work on remixing it. Later

beefy tune! Did you get a whammy pedal?

more bass.. In some parts (like @1:42) I thought the bass drum and snare was too low..

deadly guitar sounds..

Dave Lombardo is gonna be on the next album.

for real?

Thanks

b. sABBATH...YUP DAVE IS BACK WITH sLAYER FOR THE NEXT ALBUM. tHAT IS SOSWEET. tHIS KEYBOARD at work is all outta whack so forgive the shitty typing.

Nice!! Sounds like a bit of pantera influence even. Wow keyboards are totally black metal sounding! Good shit man! The bass drums are just a bit bassy for me but the triggers are OK! Definately further along than I but I have goals now so :P !

hey B. Sabbath...i didn't get a whammy pedal. i want one though. That guitar you hear has a heavy dose of chorusing. At least i think that is the guitar that you are referring to. What do whammy pedals cost...i think they arelike 150 new...am i in he ballpark?

Vesuvius...hey man keep cranking out the heavy shit. I look forward to hearing your stuff. Thanks for the comments.

sorry dude.. I misread what you wrote.. I thought you meant Dave would be on your next album.. :)

as far as whammy pedals, I like this one http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/SNAMM99/Boss/PS-5.html with the optional EV-5 expression pedal of course! I tried the Digitech whammy/wah thing, but it was way too noisy.. even when it was in bypass mode it took away from the distortion.. I had to take it out of the chain whenever it wasn't in use.. I got the ps-5 when it first came out and paid 200 plus another 50 for the EV-5..

I use it on every song and I'm still not sick of hearing it..

once again, brutal tune.. should be sick with vocals..

Hey thanks for the Link. I'll check it out. I need a good whammy pedal. I wish Dave Lombardo would participate in a song of mine. I would give my left nut for that. But as long as we are on the subject...Chris Mooney who live in Milwaukee is a really good friend of an engineer i work with and i know him. He was Slayers touring drummer in the late 80's early 90's when they were in between drummers, as they often are. I don't know what Chris is doing now, probably session drumming in a studio. Thats as close as i get to a "real Slayer drummer" I guess that is closer than most. So that is kinda cool. Anyway i am rambling now so i will just shut up.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!

Brings me back to my metalyears! Nostalgia colors my opinion, so don't pay attention!

I loooooooooove it! Tight playing man! :D

*bangs that head that didn't bang for a really long time*

Drums sound 'not thin' enough for this type of metal, I must say (like I said, the last metal I've heard was from the 80s....hmmmm, that's not true.....I played myself some Carcass last week.....what the hell, forget what I said: it sounds gooooood, the drums included)

Tears Inside at 1:4: this begs for an 'Immigrant Song' quote, c'mon, do it!

Thank you for this! It makes me insanely happy!

You rock!

M. Brane's suggestion sounds cool!

Sorry for responding so late, btw.

Thanks

Hey Pedullist...thanks for the compliments. I am glad that i errored on the side of making the drums too big, rather than too weak. This stuff is kinda my thing...i grew up listening to all this. I think i can do this fairly well. Glad that you liked this song. Let me know what you think when i get vocals on it. And Carcass was awesome. Although most people seam to gtravitate towards the old stuff, i thought that the last 3 were the best. Later

I'm with you on Carcass....Heartwork is my fave!
