Hey this has a cool mood. Nice changes and the playing is pretty tight, but felt.

The mix sounds very mono. Begs for a wider stereo image.
Could use more presence in the low lows and the high highs.

What mic did you use? Doesn't sound like a condensor, which I think your voice deserves. The vocal track lacks color. I don't mean hyped up EQ, it just sounds like your highs weren't very well captured. and the low mids are very dominant.

The song would benefit from better tracking, but the performance was very nice. Just one opinion. Very nice job!

Tom

I agree with Tom abut the mix sounding very mono.I think it would sound a lot better if the piano was a little "bigger" in the mix.

Very good song.

SLuiCe - Thanks for the comments. I find your mixes to the best on this board so any suggestions are quite welcome.

I use a Shure SM58 and I have no idea what I'm doing for mixing. I have a weak setup recording everything through a board. I need to get a better software package as I used only Cakewalk 9 whcih I'm slowly finding out is pretty awful. Any suggestions? Anyway, I like the song, hopefully I'll do it justice when I learn more. Oh yeah, remind me not to post a song the same day you do :)

Kramer - Thx. I had the piano right out there but brought it back at the final stages because I thought it was drowning out the vocal. Depends on where I play it - I hate mixing.

Real nice. You've got some great ideas in there. This mix isn't awful by any means. I agree withe comments above though. Nice drum sound, and I like the way the shaker comes in at :48. All the parts have a nice definition, but some different EQ and panning might help.

Twist

Thanks twist - I've tried doing some different panning with the instruments around the piano. Maybe I'll pan the piano instead.

Cool song. It's got a really great feel. You have the hard part down. Now, as you know, you are the right place for the rest - tracking and mixing.

I think the others covered all the points on the mix/tracking. I would love to hear this re-tracked/remixed.

Great job!

Yes if you're serious about recording your voice well, don't worry about the software for now. Consider taking that money and buying a decent condensor mic. Hell, even my Bheringer B2 was a big improvement over the SM58. The 58 is great for live stuff, but I find that to really capture details, there's no getting around the advantages of a condensor. Software is software. It won't do anything for your tracking, which is what you need to be most focused on. Take your time and get the best sound you can while you're recording. The differences in software are IMO pretty much just in file management, plugin management, graphic interface, etc. Your wave file is really the product of your microphone and preamp (and of course your ability to get the best use out of them) , or samples, but that's not the point here. If you're going to spend some money on gear improvements, start with a decent mic. That's my suggestion. And I think you deserve the results.

This has a great feel to it! Kind of Beatlely in a way (is Beatlely a word?) ...
I love your chord changes! Really excellent!

Okay, I read Sluice's comments and definitely got to agree. Get yourself a condensor mic and your vocal tracking will improve 100% ... This is to say that your vocals are really great, but will sound even better with a better mic. I think they will sit better in the mix as well.

I am really enjoying this one. I hear a "HUGE" arrangement going on in my head on this with strings, a choral background....okay, I'm going overboard, but this is really a great piece of music!

:D

very cool song.. Is that a Roland?

I'm hearing what sounds like mp3 artifacts or possible bad encoding.. not sure..

the drums sound a bit upfront to me, especially some of the cymbals.. that drum fill was a bit strange too.. I like the song.. very good melody and feel.. just needs to hit the ears a bit softer maybe..

I really like it!!! Your keys were tight. Was this all you?
You also have a really strong voice. There was the muddiness, but no worse than my best (as a rookie recorder/mixer)!!! Really, I have started to tune that out to just hear the song (oftentimes that is impossible...but I try to work with what I have)
Anyhow, keep em' coming!

boydrj - Thanks boydrj. I'm a huge Beatles fan so a comment like that can certainly make my day. :)

B.SABBATH - Yep, Roland XP-30, I've explored every inch of it and used everything on it at one time or another. Thx for the comments. I have a piano tune that I EQ'ed at the same time and there are lots of mp3 artifacts in that one. This one is too bad but yeah - they're in there.

bdbdbucksKID - Thx for the comments. I hear you on the mixing thing, you start to forget the song - you become obsessed.

Doug H - Another Ottawa'ren (or whatever that's called). I'm living in Orleans at the moment. Thanks for the comments
