So, now that my Fostex 80 R2R is up and running, I needed a mixer to complement it. I guess after all the trouble I've had with ATRs in the past, fate decided to throw me a bone finally. I found a Yamaha RM804 mixer on CL. He was asking $100, which I already thought seemed like a pretty good deal, but he mentioned trades too. Short story: I ended up trading him two dynamic mics that I hadn't touched in nearly a decade straight across.
After a good cleaning in and out, the thing looks just about brand new, and everything works perfectly. There were a few little chips here and there in the wood paneling, but luckily a brown Sharpie I had seemed very close in color. It worked amazingly well, and you'd have to scour the thing very closely to notice any of the touch-ups.
I haven't tried the pres yet, as I have 6 external pres that I already like and I planned on using them for all my recording. I rarely record more than 4 tracks at once anyway (and it's usually only one or two), but I suppose I may use a few of them if I ever have to do a bunch. There's no phantom power on the board, however, so it'd have to be a dynamic or ribbon.
Anyway, the tape ins sound great, as does the EQ, and I'm a happy camper!
What's really cool is that I now have a system that's featured in one of my favorite books: Musician's Guide to Home Recording by Peter McIan. There's a "Buyer's Guide" section that lists several different setups, and one of them is the Fostex 80 and Yamaha RM804.
