So, now that my Fostex 80 R2R is up and running, I needed a mixer to complement it. I guess after all the trouble I've had with ATRs in the past, fate decided to throw me a bone finally. I found a Yamaha RM804 mixer on CL. He was asking $100, which I already thought seemed like a pretty good deal, but he mentioned trades too. Short story: I ended up trading him two dynamic mics that I hadn't touched in nearly a decade straight across.

After a good cleaning in and out, the thing looks just about brand new, and everything works perfectly. There were a few little chips here and there in the wood paneling, but luckily a brown Sharpie I had seemed very close in color. It worked amazingly well, and you'd have to scour the thing very closely to notice any of the touch-ups.

I haven't tried the pres yet, as I have 6 external pres that I already like and I planned on using them for all my recording. I rarely record more than 4 tracks at once anyway (and it's usually only one or two), but I suppose I may use a few of them if I ever have to do a bunch. There's no phantom power on the board, however, so it'd have to be a dynamic or ribbon.

Anyway, the tape ins sound great, as does the EQ, and I'm a happy camper!

What's really cool is that I now have a system that's featured in one of my favorite books: Musician's Guide to Home Recording by Peter McIan. There's a "Buyer's Guide" section that lists several different setups, and one of them is the Fostex 80 and Yamaha RM804. :)

Wow that's really reminiscent of the old Tascam 300's -takes me back a bit. :) (I had that and the R8 .. or was it 80' :p (The 1/4" - 8..? (If so I still have a bunch of 7" reels.

Awesome! Ive been out of the loop. I didn't even know you got the 8 track fixed, and now a new mixer too!! Coolness!

Can you post more pics? Just have a big grainy one with partial images.

That's a nice little mixer. And the book you mentioned is a great one too.

The whole mixer is there. You just have to slide the scrolls slider under the image to see it. Or, right click on the image and select, view image and that will open it up in a new screen view that shrinks it down in size to fit your screen...in Firefox at least. Not sure about IE.

Cheers! :)

RFR: Sorry ... I forgot to size down the original picture. Here are some more shots. You can see the Fostex 80 in there too as well as the 4050 auto locator. (The cover is off the Fostex because I'm still calibrating it.)

Another nifty thing is that, when I do need to slip over to the dark side of the force (digital land), my little NanoKontrol fits snugly between the Yamaha's faders and forearm rest. :)

Looks like a cover over a vid monitor? Just wondering is it to dampen reflections?

:) No that's there because digital recording is a necessary evil for me. So I keep it covered except when it's absolutely essential.

Pretty cool Mr Beagle. :thumbs up:

Thanks for the pics. They load fine today.

@Ghost. Last night i couldn't scroll or open the pic. I was downloading a couple of tv shows, so maybe I was pushing my laptop to the limit.
:D

The 388 is a Euro model so conversion to US is needed. Also been sitting in storage for 20 years. Pretty sure bet the rubber is shot and lots of dioxit is needed.
Maybe those factors will keep the bids low and someone can get it reasonable.

In LA and the Bay Area, asking prices for those in good shape are 1,500. Actual sales prices? I dunno. They sit at that price for a while.

I've seen them go in my area for $350-400, but it's always been when I'm all the way out of cash :\

Beagle, congrats on the new mixer, and I'm happy you have a working 8-track machine as well!

Thanks! The wife and kids are heading out of town for six days soon and I'm staying here, so I hope to be able to get plenty of tracking done then. :)
