So I've been recording this band for about a year now. They are all fairly young(17-19) but I think have some pretty good song writing skills. Anyway I took a different approach to recording this particular track. Instead of a LDC on vocals as usual I opted for a sm57(took some major convincing)with no eq on the vocals, just a splash of reverb. It's also my first song using my Vox AC30CCH and I decided to use no eq or compression(I never use compression on dirty guitars anyway). There's also no compression on anything except the bass. This song consists of eq and that's about it. There's also no eq or compression on the master channel. The only effect used was the cosmonaut plug in on the intro(bands request). I'm starting to use this approach to improve my skills at getting it right at the source. Let me know what you like and don't.

the bass drum seams to be a bit fat. maby you could pull it away a bit from the drum, i like the guitars and the vocals. tho the vocals do seem a bit "seperated" from the rest. but I assume you recorded the vocals after the other instroments. I have no idea how to fix that at the source.. maby a bit farther away also. though I'm only an amature myself.

hope this helps.

I think most of the instruments sound pretty good. The vox do seem a bit dry.

My only real complaint is with the arrangement of the song. All the hits, stops, double-time/half-time, etc. ad infinitum ... pretty much prevented any type of groove from ever developing IMO. This to me is what happens when bands try to write complex riffs without ever learning to sit back and really groove in a pocket. I'd suggest they listen to some old Sly and the Family Stone or some old Stevie Wonder!

The vocal mix is to the taste of the vocalist himself. He like things the way he likes them, like I said it was a real bitch convincing him to use the sm57. I chose the 57, btw, because he's an overly sibilant singer and my chinese condensers really reveal that. I know exactly what I'd do to it, turn down the vox and add a little delay but it isn't what he wanted and my Mac has blown up so there's no chance for a remix.

Drums are a bit too far up front for my ears otherwise well done. Life without compression. I only use it a very little bit, (& usually to ressurect something recorded years ago).
The song sounds OK but is very of it's genre & they do need to groove a little.

Yeah I agree the drummer's like the vocalist, he wants to be upfront on the recording and wants everything to be heard loud and clear. I turned them down as much as I could before he started bitching and moaning. I wish this band would just let me do my thing but they always want to be here for everything I do.

next tyme do a copy there way, and do another copy your way. and tell them to let their freeky little friends have a listen, maby that'll knock some sense into them. :)

Actually I usually do a mix for myself but as I said earlier my Imac crapped out on me and I'm completely unable to remix anything.
