A quick introduction.....most of you know that I am a guitarist. I have owned a drum set for a few years but never actually tried or had any desire to drum full time for a band (actually no one wanted me because I suck). Recently I started jamming with some friends for fun and an albums worth of songs came out of it. This is my first attempt ever at playing drums on a recording. I also played the bass, way out of my element here.
The idea was to do a quick and "dirty" rock sounding demo. I only used a kick mic and a mono overhead on the drums. We still have some backup/harmony vocals to do. Keeping in mind that this is a demo just for fun, mix suggestions/comments are appreciated.

The Song is called TKO and the band is called GOOSE!

thanks in advance

Wireneck, this is a cool song, I am really digging it. Very clean. I am impressed at the sound you got from the one kick drum mic and one overhead mic. My guess is that you had the over head close to a ride tom, as it stands out in the mix, even more then the snare drum. What mic did you use for the over head? Very nice job.

Obese- thanks for listening. The overhead was a studio projects B1 centered on my snare. We wanted to do a quick demo and I didn't really have any help getting my drum levels. Knowing that I couldn't sit at the desk, move mics, play the drums at the same time, I didn't bother trying to setup my usual 8-9 microphones. My small tom and ride do jump out a bit more. I think I am probably not hitting my snare as hard as I should be for a single overhead recording. The kick mic was a shure Beta 52.

Sounds good man, I would have never known that you suck at drums unless you told me. :p

I'm surprised at the sound quality with a single overhead. Nice job with that.

Cool song too by the way.

Kick ass tune man! Nice southern rock feel.
I didn't notice any issues with the drums that kept me from enjoying the tune, although I am listening at work with desktop speakers.

By the way, I noticed you'e from Atlanta, if you decide to do something with that project in a slightly heavier direction drop me a line. I put on the Southern Metal Music Fest every year in Dallas, Texas on Memorial Day weekend, and that kind of sound is what it is all about. We've got bands coming in from all over the country playing with that badass, heavy southern vibe.

Peace!
Amra
aka Mike from Texas

Cool tune, Wireneck. Drums come across really well. Nice mix on those. Whole some comes across well to me. I like this type of vibe...slightly raw.

Song is cool all around...and nice drumming. It fits the tune well.

DUDE! I would like to suck that bad on drums.

Really nice sounds, amazing what you got out of the 2 mic's on drums. THes song itself is pretty cool too!

Cheers!

I think the song has an early Deep Purple vibe. Your other tunes on down you page on soundclick are a big change from the first tune :) We go from old school to death metal school.

Metalhead thanks for the listen. I was a little hesitant when I first setup the mono overhead. After hearing the playback, I thought it was adequate for the type of sound I was trying to achieve. This is purely a rock demo and I wanted to put my concentration towards playing a good take as opposed to worrying about mic placement/phase relationships etc.
I am pretty much screwed once the Canvas Solaris fans find out about this demo. All of my metal credibility just went out the door haha.

Amra thank you for the listen and the offer. These guys do not share my taste of heavier metal so I doubt the sound is going to go in a more extreme direction any time soon.

Dogman thanks for the listen. Glad you enjoyed the tune.

Polska thanks for the listen.

You caught me. I am primarily a prog/metal guitarist. I love old school rock though. I tend to get bored if I play that stuff on guitar but it has proven to be more entertaining behind the drum kit. Who would have known? Thanks for the listen.

good stuff wireneck. the 2 mic drums sound fine here. i would never have guessed.

Nah, just don't do it in Canvas Solaris and we won't hold it against you :p

Yeah cool song. Drums do sound great for 2 freaking mics. Well done. Guitars sound awesome. I think the vocals can come out a little more. Has sort of a Turbonegro feel to it. Nice job. :)

Dude, this is sooooo different from other things you have posted... Really cool.

Honestly, if you decided to do this full time, you would be good at it.

I can't give you anything mix-wise that hasn't been said because I am on a laptop in a hotel room.

Have to say that the drumset sound makes the track. It's very live sounding. They cymbals sound especially good.
