I am currently using an Alesis multimix 16 firewire to record my band while just jamming (tired of forgetting some awesome shit we just played) I have used up all of my xlr inputs with preamps on the alesis. I have a behringer x2222 that I am using to route a guitar and bass through to the Alesis. It is all set up and works great so here is my question............. Should I still set the guitar/bass level to 0db/unity on the behringer? Just curious if I should bring the levels down a little before going into the Alesis. I realize it may seem like a bit much since for guitar and bass I now have a gain control and four faders that all affect the sound. My hope would be to get things set pretty good and not have to f*ck with it too much. The guitar and bass are not micked up but ran through a DI box. We also use the Behringer for our vocalist, but he being routed to a PA and will not be included in the Alesis.(I'll record him seperate. Anyway, any thoughts?

To keep things simple, set all the faders that the signal goes through to unity. Adjust the gain on the mixer to get a good level, then use the one channel fader on the mixer to control the level thereafter.

Thanx for the help. Guitarist is coming today so I will try and get everything set.

DI shouldn't need a pre-amp should it? you can run it through a channel without a pre and just normalize the track in your DAW. What are you mic'ing now thats using up all 8 pres?

You know you can easily run a pair of cables out from your Behr to one of the stereo channels on the Alesis.

drums are taking up all xlrpres

So you blend the bass and the guitar through a Behringer mixer, but seperate all the drum signals?

A more conventional way would be to mix the toms together on the mixer and give the guitar and bass seperate tracks.

Just a suggestion.

I think I got it worked out. guitar through main/L on behringer to alesis, Bass through Main/R to alesis. Tried it out the other day and sounded good. Seems like I will be able to use the sub 1 and 2 the same way, although I haven't looked into how it is routed in the behringer. Right now I have the Bass/guitar in/out of the Main L/R to alesis, and I am using a sub channel for vocals to PA and it works how I want it to. I glad I didn't get rid of the behringer.

Also, the guitars are not blended, everything is on it's own track.
