Hey guys,

I need help on a couple of things here.

First, not sure if it's my imagination, but the 2 panned rythm guitars don't seem as "Big" as I'd like them. I wonder if this is one of those times that I should record 2 more guitar tracks to double the 2 existing tracks?

Also, I put a little bit of distortion on the lead vocals in the verses. I think I like it, or does it just sounds like a badly recorded vocal track? I've lost perspective on that one.

Other than that, any opinions on the levels of everything are always welcome.

Thanx

SPELL OVER YOU

I don't hear the distortion on the vocals per se, but the vox in the verse is different from the chorus. I hear more of a flange effect on the chorus, but it's probably from double tracking.

Whether you bring out the rhythm guits more or not is a personal taste thing. They work well where they are, but more of them would be cool, too. everyone is going to have a different opinion. If it were me, I'd have them a tad louder.

I have probably said this in the past, but I always thought you crashes could come out more, or maybe a little top end on your kit altogether. Maybe it's just my hearing going bad. :(

Anyways. Good song. When is the next cd coming out??

Thanx Cili. I tried simply turning up those guitars, but it's not really that. In my head, I hear them with more "meat". But I know that mixing a song right after finishing recording it isn't a good idea, but I always do it anyway. Because of that, I sometimes hear things "wrong". Maybe the guitars are fine, I'll know when I listen again in a few weeks. :D

You might be right about the drums. I can bring up the overheads if needed. I'll see if others agree.

Thanx a lot, Cili.

Cool tune. I'm a big fan of distortion so I think it works well on your vocal. Guitars don't sound 'not big' to me, I don't think they need any more tracks. Maybe just hi pass them a bit lower to fill them out a bit as you've got excellent separation with the bass already

Thanx a lot Bull. Glad to hear the guitars are alright.

I did the vocals pretty quick on this and I'm going to re-do a few lines before I call this finished.

Man this is killer! love this song! everything sounds great.. as for your guitars, I would have had a bit more grit on them..still sounds killer tho..great song!!

I definitely think the guitars need more something. Even if you hadn't mentioned it, I woulda said something. The leads seem fine, but the rhythms do lack meat, balls, punch, whatever you wanna call it. They're a little scratchy and thin. Kind of like they were recorded at a low volume. That's my only nit though. How you wanna address that is up to you. I don't think more layers is really necessary. This song and mix is sparse enough that just two rhtyhm tracks should be plenty. Just maybe retrack with more powerful tone.

The rest sounds great. That snare work is fantastic and you captured it awesomely. Good bass and kick presence. Vocals seemed fine to me.

Thanx a lot man. You're right about the guitars. It's not a hard part. I'll probably re-rack them. Thanx for the listen and comments.

Thanx Greg.

Ok, so we hear the same thing in the guitars.

I know why. I did track them not loud enough. But it's also how I played the chords. I think they should be meaty bar chords on the low E and A string. Instead, I played the "A" chord, for example, on the A and D strings, like a rock and roll "A". I'll re-track that part with more volume and the right voicing on the chords.

Thanx dude.

RAMI,
cool song - lots of detail in the snare and the bass is ace as usual.
The rhythm guitars sound like you captured the top end only or had overdone a hi pass.
They don't fizz which is good but the potato of the snare, kick & bass need more meat from the guitars.
Terrific song actually!

Thanx a lot Ray. I agree on the rythm guitars. They were just played and captured wrong. It will take me 3 minutes to re-track once I decide to do it.

Thanx a lot brother.

Good mix. I wasn't a fan of the distortion on the vox myself. My first thought on hearing it was "is he using Auto-tune or something? That can't be right!"

I didn't think the guitars suffered too much from being too small. They're a little low in the mix to me. To my ear they're missing a little on the high end - that little sparkly-sizzly stuff. Like in the 7K to 10K range.

I didn't hear much in the way of vocal distortion. I'd say you need to adjust the wet/dry mix on that.

But it was still a real good mix. Cool sound on the snare.

Thanx VHS. I didn't think there was enough distortion for it to be "liked" or not "not liked", but you find it doesn't work, so it's something to consider. Definitely no auto-tuning.

Thanx a lot.

Thanx TripleM. I haven't really sat down and listened to this since posting, but I'll look into either re-tracking/ re-eqing/turning up those guitars.

I think you'd hear the difference if I turned off the distortion on the vocals. They're subtle enough, I think, to not be noticed if they're there, but missed if they weren't.

Thanx guys.

Hey Rami,
This doesn't sound as nice and clean as your usual stuff from what I remember although nicely recorded as usual so big ups on that.
The dist vox dont sound that dist I can hear a little dist, maybe try more dist to show off the effect or keep it crispy clean :)

The rhythm guitars sounds real nice, just the right amount of low mids, seems that the Mix is lacking overall in an in your face sound which I would like to hear from this Mix.
Maybe somehow bring out the rhythm guitars a little more (as you said with the panning) maybe try 100 L and 100 R panning.

Nice song as well.

G

I think you hit the nail on the head with that. Play power chords rather than open!!! simple.

Hey Eck. Every 4 or 5 songs I post, someone will say something like this about a particular tune, and I probably should have asked sooner what they mean. So I have to ask what you mean. I'm sure knowing will help me.

As far the rest, I will re-track the guitars and much of the vocals. I should have sang the shit out of this one, and when I sing along to it now, I know exactly what I need to do with a few lines to really make it shine.

Thanx for the help.

Re-tracked the guitars, vocals, brought up the overheads. Probably did a few other things that I can't remember too.

The main thing is the guitars. Are those guitars playing the power chords better? Now, I find them a little over-powering, but it could be because I gor used to the other wimpier sound.

Thanx for all the help so far.

me likey. :)

Maybe I'm biased towards your stuff and I can't really be critical of your mixes. I like everything you put up, so I don't really hear problems in your mixes. To me, the first version was awesome, I didn't see a need to change the guits. But now that you did, it makes sense to do so. Sounds great. Good recommendations from everyone in this thread. I'll be quiet from now on.... :)

Kind of has a Spoon vibe to it, btw.
