I spent about $1,000 on rigid fiberglas last week. I've pondered what other gear I may have purchased but alas I realize that it was better spent on treating the room than new gear. Here is couple pics of what I got so far. I'm gonna make the ceiling a black hole for sound (hopefully) cause it's lower than it should be. There's the new set of Tama's too! Granstar customs.

Another shot

Going to basically completely cover the ceiling in 3".

Love those drums:D

A bit of the control room

What a difference this stuff made. As soon as the corners were gone, I checked a couple mixes I've done recently. Man, I can hear where I've been screwing up.

Thats great HangDawg. How many pieces did you actually put up? Nice drums too! Did you leave an airspace behind the 703?
fitZ:)

Rick: "Did you leave an airspace behind the 703?"

Hangdawg: "Airspace? You mean there's supposed to be an AIRSPACE? Fu-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-uu-u-u-u-u-u-u-ck!"

If by pieces you mean panels, I will have about 30 of varying sizes. One wall opposite the drums has 1 big panel 4' x 10' x 3". All the vertical corners are cut off with 3". The ceiling will have 12 2'x4'x3" basically covering everything. I had 24 sheets delivered and I have a few too many. The only other place I have to put them is on the ceiling above the mix position. It's a sloped ceiling about 12' at the point. I may take the last 6 pieces and make 1 big panel 10' x 4' x 6" and put that sucker up there. That should suck up some low end. I didn't leave an air space except for the corner ones of course. I might make a sort of spacer for the big panel in the tracking room and get it off the wall about 6" The big test will be tracking the drums. I'm guessing it will be alot better than bare drywall. The next step is the floor. I can make a 10' x 10' section of hardwood floor for $100.

Now I was under the impression the airspace is optional and only serves to lower the frequency that is absorbed. Am I wrong?

Dawg,

> I was under the impression the airspace is optional and only serves to lower the frequency that is absorbed. <

Yes, that's correct, but you want the absorption to work to as low a frequency as possible. Air spaces are free! Fortunately your corner mounted panels have an inherent air space.

I don't have huge amounts of space to work with.:( Most of it will probably stay flush against the walls. The 1 big 10x8 panel, I think I will get some air behind it.

Dawg,

> I don't have huge amounts of space to work with <

The fact that it's 3 inches thick helps a lot. Hey, if it sounds good, it probably is good.

Howdy all, hey Dawg, I'm no expert at these things. I was just asking about the airspace to find out what other people do, not to tell you there should be one.:D From my understanding, if you only use 1", then it probably would be better to have the airspace. But 3"sounds great. I've heard it myself at the front of a control room, sorta like LEDE. Man, with the whole front of the room, walls and ceiling, completely covered in fabric covered 3" 703 panels, right up to the console, the sound was absolutely transparent. Blew me away how good it sounded. He had 3 polycylindrical diffusers on the rear wall, which I really don't know if they really contributed to the overall sound cause I never heard it without them, but crap, I can't wait to do it to mine, along with a few panel traps and a large quadratic diffuser and a slot absorber on each side at my back wall. That is if I have room. I haven't laid out the diffuser yet. Anyway, good luck with your room Hangdawg.

Oh, btw Ethan, thank you so much for the info on the other thread, I never got back to thank you. I just read a bunch on your site, so I AM paying attention and not just bitchin and moanin about acoustics:D Its just a matter of moola with me.. you know....dollars and cents. The stuff the wife don't let go of easily even though I make it:p Ha! Too many damn cats to feed:mad: Arrrrgggggrrrrrrrr......!

It was tough to even convince myself I had to spend that much money on insulation. But I knew it had to be done. Now I need new monitors. KRK V8's or the Blue Sky 6.5" sats and the 8" sub. Can't make up my mind.

Quick update

Holy crap what a difference. I used to see the meters move whenever the was the slightest sound in there being picked up by the overheads. Not anymore. Matter of fact, I slapped the wall as hard as I could and narry twitch on the meters. I'm guessing that's a good thing:D I did a really quick drum track. It's a thousand times better. This changes everthing. And man do my old mixes suck. I have to start all over again.

Thats good to hear!!! Im in the process of doing something similar at my place. Good to hear that your treatments made a very noticable diff!!! (Oh- sorry that your old mixes suck:D )

What kind of cloth is that you used to cover them with? Is that like a canvas?

hey
what kind of measurements do you do to get that thing in your walls/ceiling...or you just put it and thats it??

i mean...whats the difference if you leave spaces in the walls or if you completely cover it??
