Hey, folks. Never knew this forum existed... this is cool.

Here's my setup:

Windows 7 (x64) Desktop
CAD condenser mic
MOTU 828
Swagg acoustic/electric guitar
M-Audio Keystation Pro 88

However, the MOTU 828 just died on me. It turns on but the computer doesn't recognize it's connected. So I'm currently looking for an inexpensive replacement for it.

Before spending money, I'd try reinstalling (or updating) the MOTU828 drivers. It could be as simple as corruption there.

You know, I did try that... but what I did NOT try (and I know better than this, working in IT for a living) is completely removing the MOTU drivers, rebooting, and THEN re-installing. I will give this a try tonight. Thanks!

OK.... I didn't try what Bobbsy suggested, based on some responses I got to another thread I started. OK, I did something really stupid with my MOTU 828, in desperation. I've established that I've probably ruined the device.

I need suggestions on a replacement, if possible. Budget: under $200. I'm looking at the M-Audio FireWire Solo - anybody had any good dealings with it for recording vocals or acoustic guitar?

Also... and here's the REALLY DUMB question I've searched long and hard for an answer to, but I cannot seem to find one.

When I was using the MOTU 828, I had the condenser mic plugged into Channel 1, my acoustic guitar plugged into Channel 2, and setup my outputs in Cubase for channels 7 and 8, and had my monitors plugged into those channels on the MOTU. I had the MOTU channels mentioned above as inputs and outputs in Cubase, respectively. I also had all Windows sounds using the MOTU.

Here's the dumb question - should I really be using an audio interface as an audio interface for ALL WINDOWS SOUNDS? Could that be part of what I was doing wrong with the MOTU? Or... when folks refer to audio interfaces as external "sound cards", that's exactly what they mean, and I can setup the Sounds Control Panel in Windows 7 to use the MOTU Channel 7 and 8 as outputs if I have my monitors plugged into channels 7 and 8 on the MOTU?

I know... REALLY dumb question... but I want to understand this as best as I can.
