New MTR: Fostex LR16 !!!

It's officially released now.

It looks like it has a lot to offer, with sensible architecture, analog-like controls & records 16-simul + stereo,... live to HD.

It's optimized for live recording.

I see it as filling the niche that the Tascam SX-1 16-tracker was occupying.;)

I've not read any forum posts on it yet. On the surface it looks keen!;)

I don't see any mention for lightpipes, I thought it was shown
in one of the close ups of the back of it, but that was just
phantom power switches.

I just want to record direct to hard disk and want the best
sound. Don't care about editing on it. I wonder if it would
compare to HD24 XR?

It sure looks old school and straight forward operation wise.

One way to learn about a machine is to download the user manual. It won't tell you how good it is but it will tell you what makes it tick. I do't think there are any TOSlink connectors on it.

You know I don't see any way to hook up a external
clock to this. There is no BNC, S/PDIF, TOS link nothing.
I can't imagine a piece of digital equipment with no way
to sync.

Now I know why know one has bought one:D

I don't know if anyone's bought one. It's still rather new.

No slaving to external sync, but it has MIDI Out, so presumably it can operate as MIDI master only? That would be typical of a midline digital multitracker (like the DP-02), wouldn't it?

So, that's like a half hearted implementation of MIDI sync, typical of a midline all-in-one'r, but the rest of the design seems pretty well thought out, (IMO).

Is anyone using the Fostex LR 16 ?

I've read manual.
I understand what this unit's " in's and out. "
What I would like is some feedback from someone who owns and uses one of these units, either in home or live application. What's it sound like, ect ? Any info, impressions, comments, complaints.
I'm just trying to get an idea of overall quality.
Thanks.

Fostex LR16

Im using it as a live mixer! Sounds good and the limiters are perfect! Easy to use and very light to take to tours! Nothing bad to say about it :-) Just dont record its own effects! Use external delay or what ever you like to use (internal effects does not have tap tempo)! Good product:)

IMO $1800 and no digital I/O = fail.
It's quick and dirty for getting 16 tracks live.

Are you recording live shows with this unit ? If so, do you create a new projects for each song or do you record the entire preformance on one project and edit it later ? Can the markers somehow be used for this ?

Are you still happy with this unit ? Any issues with latency, zipper noise or any other quality issues ? Would you recomended it to a friend ?

How's it's live and recorded sound quality ? Any thing else you can pass along about it ? Thanks .

I have a Fostex VF160EX and think it's great for what it is. However, IMHO, a company with little or no US support is someone I will stay away from for future purchases. I would think twice about investing that kind of $$ with someone who will be almost impossible to get help from if things go south.
