New MSR-16 heads?

Hm...

I'd have to see other pictures to know for sure but it does not appear clean like a brand new head...dust here, a smudge there, and the pins on the connector plug are not straight. I'd be asking to see some better pics at different angles.

Hi,

I am not saying that I am sure that it is a new head, but it could well be that the head has a coating of preservative on it, like a grease substance. That would explain the funny coloring. It looks like it has no wear.

The bent pins are nothing, these pins bend very easily and could have bent in the bag.

I would still ask a few questions about where it came from, they have invited questions.

Cheers

Alan.

Looks good from that angle. Seller needs more photos though. Since Tascam doesn't even make these heads anymore I would consider it. The seller has great feedback... that's something. :)

I'll let you know when they get here from Ireland. Seller had good feedback, paypal protections, and offered 7 day return.

Any easy way to tell if they've been relapped or anything else obvious to look for? I don't have a specimen to compare to, so any tips appreciated. BTW they are discontinued according to openreel.net, but last time I checked, (a few days ago) Tascam still has them in stock, (they *don't* have the counter roller though. I think JRF Magnetics has tehm too.

Cool! Hope they work out.

That's good to know. I checked with Tascam in California a couple years ago and they said they didn't have any and they would no longer be available. I was thinking about getting an MSR-16 at the time and wondered what kind of parts I could get for it.

Maybe they found some old stock or the demand was such that they had some more made. Good news for sure.

A brand new MSR head has a peak to it, whereas a relapped head is more rounded across the whole surface of the head. Hopefully someone with a newish head will come along and post some pics. Also look at it under a magnifying glass to see that its not scratched anywhere that the head meets the tape.

Blue Jinn, what was Tascam's price for the record/play head? And what is their phone number please?

Thanks

David

Last time I asked it was $950. I called about 5 days ago looking for a counter reel, which they don't sell anymore, I asked if they still had heads and was told yes, and asked if they were "still about $1,000" and she also said yes. About a year ago I also enquired if JRF Magnetics had heads and they also indicated they did.

Had them professionally looked at, and not new, estimate 80-85% head life left. Would require a relap to act like a new head, but careful installation should also result in like new performance.

However, compared to price of a new head ($1,000.00 or so) and this one ($200) probably still a reasonable deal.

Is the seller going to give any refund because they arent new?

FYI, seller refunded cost of relapping. So reconditioned head in new condition w/ 80-85% life.
