New Mixer, New to Recording

Hi, me and my best bud finally got us a mixer the other day. A behringer eurorack ub1202. His brother has one so he was sure that if I bought it he could set it up. I have a dell optiplex with no sound card. He tried hooking it up but cubase was not picking up the mic, I have another program that was free called audicity and the mic was being picked up threw that program.

What I wana know is what exactly do I need to hook this mixer up to my computer to get it working properly. Can an audio interface be used if I dont have a sound card?
 
Yes, you need an audio interface (which functions as a sound card), The mixer only has audio outputs, you need something that coverts the audio (analog) signal) to digital format, then delivers it to the computer via USB or Firewire, (or hardwired, if an internal soundcard).
 
Ok so basically all I need is an audio interface, how do you connect the mixer to an interface? I know what it looks like and all I just want to be sure where to plug the interface into the mixer.
 
also I have a mobile pre with pro tools se interface, how do i hook this up to the mixer? it has line outputs 1 and 2 and line inputs 1 and 2 with a usb
 
Depending upon what you're trying to do, you don't connect the mixer to the interface at all - in fact you don't need a mixer to record... just an interface.

A mixer that doesn't have individual outs/USB or Firewire interface is only of use in recording if you want to send multiple signals already mixed together into your software DAW... most people would avoid this, however, if possible.

Why do you think you need a mixer? What were you planning on doing with it?

If you have the m-audio mobile pre, then you already have an interface and don't need anything more...

*Disclaimer... I'm not an interface expert, or a mixer expert... and I'm not familiar with what you have. Perhaps the mixer will be useful for monitoring
 
The m-audio mobile pre is not the most sophisticated of interfaces, but it should satisfy your immediate needs.

You don't necessarily need a mixer.

However, the 1202 will give you extra inputs if you want to mix down, say, a drum kit, down to two tracks to go into the line input of the m-audio. The 1202 gives you some extra flexibility for monitoring with its 'control room' functions.
 
To answer the basic question:

MIXER MAIN OUTPUTS >> M AUDIO PRE LINE INPUTS >> USB TO COMPUTER
 
Yes, but could someone please help him and me with how to bring it all back into the mixer. I have a Behringer but want to keep learning this connecting issue, esp. if someone has info on using the 4 buss type or mixer, with alts and sub out, thanks, DR
 
Audio out from the M Audio to inputs on the mixer, but why do you want to use the mixer at all? As already explained,, unless you are mixing down mutiple instruments/mics to the 2 channels on the M Audio, its superfluous.

Interface out >> mixer tape in. Switch tape in to control room. Connect monitors to control room out.

Better still, don't worry about going back to mixer . . . just go from interface to monitors. You don't need the mixer in this part of the signal chain.
