I was wondering, what would be an upgrade for a mic from the Studio Projects C1 microphone into a VTB-1 preamp? I got a Waveterminal 192 L, Event 20/20 monitors, as well as the MXL 990/001 mics, and a Presonus Compressor. On R&B Singers, the C1 shines VERY well because they add warmth to their voices, and thus when I record with the C1, very little processing [aside from panning and "riding the faders"] is required. I want something similar for rap vocals for people with thin voices, as the C1 starts to add too much sibalance on their voices by just a small amount, which although can be fixed by spot editing the sibalance troubled areas, I just do not want to deal with as it takes up too much time. In addition, a desser just does not cut it. I have to put those dessers in series, and even then, it requires too much processing power. I would much rather just get a warmer mic so that it can auto add the warmth to the vocals. Anyone got a suggestions? I want 1 mic up to the $500.00 range, and another one thats in the $1000.00 range.

I sort of go for the dynamic mic or the ribbon mic into the tube mic pre.

Why don't you try the SM7b into your VTB1?

It doesn't take much to upgrade from that

It does what?? A C1 with warmth?? you must have the rarest mic on earth. The C1 is a harsh nasty thing and I don't know anyone who would call it "warm"

You need to learn how to use a de-esser or side chain a compressor and set your mic up right in the first place.

There's that word again "warmer" do you know what "warm" means??

Why don't you try setting up 2 cloth type pop filters one right after the other about 6 inches from the mic and about and inch apart from each other and then put the mic capsule about nose high from the singer with a slight tilt towards his mouth hole or simply try turning the mic capsules lightly away from the mouth

I am gonna echo that a ribbon or a higher end dynamic will get you what you want. The SM7b would be good, but you may need a nicer preamp too. Maybe instead of buying two mics, buy the mic and a new pre?

Yup, best investment you couild make is an SM7b ( The C1 ain't that bad, just different and you are wise to wait until you noticed a need before shopping)
