Hello folks, I've decided to buy a new microphone for my vocals, after reading through the "Recording Guitar and vocals at the same time" thread numerous times. The AKG c1000s simply has not enough power for me, it's not the best mic in the world. So I am going to increase my budget  god forbid.

So far I have a c1000s, 220 perception and a SM57. I need something better, I'm looking at a budget of £200-£300 I reckon. What else is to consider is I will be recording guitar and vocals and the same time, I don't know if my vocal style will help the suggestions. I don't really know who to compare myself to other than maybe a slight bit of Caleb from KOL with hints of Bon Iver, so varying really.

I have no experience with figure 8's but it could be a thought, I need advice though. And a dynamic for my vocals to avoid guitar pickup, I'm not sure about but could be another idea.

Any help or suggestions would be gladly appreciated, and thank you for all of your useful information so far in my other thread.

Regards
Chris

How much is that in real money? SM7 if you can get there, something CAD if not, Audio Technica 4040 can be sweet, Theres an RE 15 in the classifieds that is a great mic going for pennies on the dollar

Bump! In real money? you mean dollars? about $500-$600, I already have an SM57 ^

yea that SM7 looks nice, are dynamics not as good for vocals though because of the frequency response? Have you tried the SM7?

Excellent choice! I have both but the SM7 gets more use than any other mic I own, including Brauner, AT, beyer ribbons,EV, etc..............

Dynamics are better for many vocals because they are more forgiving than most condencers.

Hmmm see that's the dilemma I face, Condensor or Dynamic. But if I will be recording acoustic guitar with vocals (same time) then maybe the dynamic would make much more sense? I mean can you really tell a BIG difference? I have been reading some good things about the SM7. Is there much diffference between the SM7 and SM7B btw?

Chris

One of them has a B in the model number.

yea cheers man I got that...but is there actually a technical difference? I don't feel like that was a stupid question  As there usually is...other wise it would seem a bit pointless.

The difference is actually in the mounting system...lol...other than that the mics are exactly the same.

I mic my baby grand with an Equation Audio F.20 condenser microphone. It was inexpensive and works great. I have some friends that use it in the studio and live and they seem to like it also.
