new member, last time i recorded was on tascam 424!

Hi everyone, my name is Rob and I've been lurking there for awhile, and finally signed up. I am looking to get back into music and recording after a 16 year absence. I will be looking for tips and ideas in the future on construction of my basement studio, to selecting gear, as well as working the board. I'm still used to the tascam 424, so I look forward to reading all the posts that will be helpful to me. Thanks! Rob

If I remember rightly, that's the 4 track version of the 488. A marvelous beast. But in the end {after 17 years and 24 albums worth of songs}, I found it limiting in ways I wasn't prepared to spend any more time in overcoming so I 'upgraded' to an Akai DPS12i which, with it's editing capabilities, I have always considered as the perfect halfway house between the old cassette portastudio and the computer DAW.
 
Don't feel bad, I still use a tascam dp01. I like the simplicity of it. I'm used to knobs instead of menus. I read alot here also, and the jargon is kind of scary; plus no money $ to do it. I may have to look into what grimtraveller is using

Not really these days. What we used to think of as Deep Thought is $100 second hand now. Something 2 core, 2Gish CPU and 4G ram will cover most recording and editing work. In fact you could more than halve that spec if you just wanted to "grab" tracks.

What are you using to talk to us Rob? Bet it will do until they ask you to score the next Les Mis!
