Hi all! I've been lurking here for a while and figured it's time to post a mix. I'd love to get your opinions on the recording, mix and any other thoughts you may get. The song is one of five songs recorded for an EP with my band Evangelyn. Everything is recorded live except some additional ambient instruments and some overdubbing. I've done a quick mastering which towards the end flattens the mix too much. But once the mix is set it will be mastered by someone else (meaning someone that actually knows what they're doing).

Cheers

Listening now...

Wow, I really like this :)

Very haunting... I can hear what you're talking about regarding the flatness... Would like to hear some of the drum fills brought out a bit more perhaps...

I like the singer... Is that you?

Nice tune & Welcome to HR!

:)

Hey Wirebird,

Very cool sounding song. Excellent performances. Very nicely mixed. Master could use just a touch of presence, imho. But I'm certainly no expert.

Nicely done.

Chris

^^^ agree.

Well done, very trippy and haunting sounds. Love the piano.

Well written song! Catchy hook.

hey I would really like to try and mix and master this and I will do it for free if you wouldn't care for me to do it I have never messed with anything like this track I would like to try it

Wow. I don't have any criticism. The song is well written, performed and mixed. Everything is in it's own space. Even during the loud parts, I can still hear everything well. I would pay money for this EP if it's all this good. Well done.

Really nice song. I particularly like the vocals. What mic did you use?

I'm not really a pro, so can't really comment too much on the mix; but sounded pretty well balanced to me.

Great Job!

Thanks a lot guys for your kind words, I'm happy that you like it! :)

BentRabbit: Thanks, I agree, the drum fills could be boosted a bit. I'm not yet satisfied with the overall mix of the drums, think there's a little more work to do.
Yes, I'm the singer in the band.

Chris: Thanks, I'm very fortunate to be able to work with these very talented musicians. They make it a joy to record and produce. I agree about the presence, I'm hoping the mastering studio will take care of that.

Jammer429: Thanks, that's a very kind offer. I will discuss with the others if we should make the tracks available for mixing.

guitar zero: Thanks, that's good to hear. I don't know if the rest of the EP is up to par, but I would like to post the other songs here too when they're mixed.

Aled King: Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I used a Røde NT-2. I wish I could remember with what preamp, but we borrowed a couple at the time so I forgot.

I liked this as well.

Would love the vocals to separate more - greater clarity. But I am a stickler for lyrical clarity/understanding. But stylistically (for the sound) it might be right.

Sounds really good though.

Thanks mmonline :) Do you mean separate as in louder in volume, or with a brighter sound? I always find it difficult to set the vocal levels in the mix. Some say that singers shouldn't mix their own vocals, that they tend to lower them too much in the mix, which is why I often raise them higher than I would want them. But often that is not enough.

Beautiful song, great voice!
My only nit would be the drums. They sound a bit weak and undefined, especially the kick is hard to make out. Great stuff, hope to hear more from you!

Joey :):):):)

Great tune, well done for live.... I found the bass overpowering the mix somewhat. That could be the mastering... But again I think the song has a great quality to it....

Listening now, this is a very good song, I'm more of a rock-n-roller, but this is very good. I really don't have enough experience at all this to comment on the mix, but it sounds fine to me. Very good!!!

Thanks guys for all the input and kind words :)

Joey: Thanks, yea the drums definitely needs some more work. It's great to get this kind of response on a mix, especially when people agree on a certain part then you know for sure it needs fixing.

ido1957: Thanks, I agree, there's too much bass overall. I think it's best to fix in the final mastering. If I remember correctly I added some in my quick mastering.

Wirebird,
Mastering is a secret science come art that plugs jsut don't manage to get right. It's wise that you're getting someone with "the knowledge" to do it.
The bass is a bit boomy and everywhere at once - might just need a bit of filtering down low as well as a little definition around 3Khz.
The cymbals bother me a little bit - they seem to spread and take over for a moment.
Drums - yeah the kick doesn't kick - I can't feel it at all.
The rest of the instruments are nicely done & sit well.
Vocals are really good - raspy melodic - with a little Charles Aznavor (sp) talking misery added.
Good song too!
