Late-blooming songwriter!
Still a bit of a rough draft, will likely tweak it somewhat.

Michael Jackson's music was part of the soundtrack of many of our lives...this is my tip of the hat to him.

KING OF POP
Copyright 2009 by Mike Pilling

V1
Gary Indiana
Steel was king , the only thing
A fella named Joe

Came from Arkansas, boys
Via California’s sun
Ran a crane, rode the train
Felt his life was done

PRE
Workin hard to raise a family
Five boys of his own
Singing round the table
No way he could have known

CH
That kid could sing
Became a king
A thriller, that’s no lie
That kid could write
He could excite
Will we ever know why

V2
You know those five were magic
Playin gigs around the town
To their nail Joe was the hammer
But he couldn’t beat em down

Motown came a knockin
The machine began to turn
The kid stepped up, he was just a pup
The star began to burn

PRE
Workin hard to make the music
No stopping him now
Spinning in the footlights
Belt the songs out take your bow

CH
That kid could sing
Became a king
A thriller, that’s no lie
That kid could write
He could excite
Will we ever know why

V3
The next years were a flurry
Life was off the wall
The long hard climb, still in his prime
He soon began to fall

You know you gotta wonder
Why it had to be that way
Was it such a mess, or was it such success
That’s for another day

PRE
He left us with the music
And that’s really all there is
He wrote it and he sang it
The legacy is his

CH
That kid could sing
Became a king
A thriller, that’s no lie
That kid could write
He could excite
Will we ever know why
Will we ever know why

Thanks Frankie. I envision it with more of a funk/R&B vibe to it. In fact, I'd like to use the bass line from "Billie Jean" on parts of the verse.

But thanks for your suggestion!

Well I finally got this thing recorded...but I'm going on vacation tomorrow, I'll post it when I'm back.

I managed to get the Billie Jean drumbeat and bass line into it!
