So a few years ago I had a decent little set up using a Fostex MR8, some 57s and condensor. I used a generic behringer euro whatever mixer and a Presous Bluetube. I mixed at all through Cubase SE It sounded alright but it could have been much better. My fostex broke and ive been out ever since.

Two years later

I just got a new HP Pavillion laptop 4 g ram, dual core etc. Pretty sure it will be able to handle whatever.

I have been reading around and im thinking the usb/firewire interface method is the way to go.

I will primarily be recording vocals, guitar(mostly miced cabs) and drums.

Ive looked into a few interfaces like the Edirol FA-66, or the UA-25EX, or even a Firebox but i really dont know.

I guess i am looking for any sort of recomondation. I have roughly 300-350 to spend, but I dont want to waste my money If im not going to get a real nice sound. Also would other software I get make a difference in sound i.e. getting a better cubase or something like wavelab too....

anddddd I heard that I wont be able to use my bluetube becuase the pres in an interface render them obsolete, is this true.

Thank you.

How many tracks do you need to track at once, and how many mic pre's do you need? There's a million 2 channel interfaces in and below that price range. There's a few (not many) interfaces in that prices range with more tracks, with arguable lower quality pre's and AD converters.

im not to picky about simultaneous tracks, as long as it has at least two. Im more concerned with the acctual quality of sound.

Would i be better off using my Blutube for the pres or does it not work like that, or would there be better pres in a given interface?

In that price range, you're prolly better off using the bluetube. You could get a little Presonus Firebox or something, that'd let you use your bluetube, and you'd get an additional 2 mic pres. 6x10 firewire for $300, not bad.

If you really only need/want 2 channels, then a little USB mixer would be cheap and effective. Something like a Yamaha MW10 or Alesis Multimix 8. $150 new, $100 on ebay. I used one of those for years and they're pretty nice, until you need more outputs.

Ill probably just go the extra mile and get the firepod or the FP now, unless there is a reason i shouldn't.

And also is there big difference in the quality of recording in your DAW, such as Cubase SE vs. Cubase Studio? Or is most of what makes the sound better is what you do after in the daw?

the fa-101 is great. I can record 8 analog tracks at once. I need a preamp for 6 of them though, but I have a behringer mixer (eurorack like yours prob) and it can do 4 pres sent to the line ins... and I have a behringer mix pre. So i can record 7 tracks at once with it. I paid $240 for it used. :)

I got a USB Lexicon Alpha ASIO thing that does what I need it to do. The Omega is good also, that is if your looking for a USB Interface.

Not really.. I think the free version LE has the same quality as Studio, there's just less of everything. You can't record as many tracks simultaneously, you only get a couple plugins per track, etc. The only real difference is in the limitations.
