Hi Guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Im currently converting a room into a home studio room and I am undecided on which room to use.

I was thinking my spare bedroom, but in the last few days it has become a little bit of a issue because we have family staying with us in the next few weeks or my other option is to convert part of the shed into a recording room, only down side to that is it is quite a small space.

I have attached to pictures of each room, which room would you choose if you had the choice???

Any advice is more then welcome!

move the family to the shed and use the larger space! Welcome to the forum. Seriously, can you work in the bedroom without issues with disturbing anyone? The shed may be a better choice. :D

If waiting a few weeks would get you the bigger room back from the guests, I'd wait and use the larger room. However, it can often come down to a case of "needs must".

If you do end up in the smaller space I seriously wouldn't try to create a tiny permanent "vocal booth". I'd use folding frames and movers blankets to make a temporary space open to the whole room. Small vocal booths rarely sound anything other than boxy.

Thanks for the reply.

Lets just say I go with the bigger room, I wont be able to create any type of vocal booth in that room at all. I will just have to record with a temp one like you said (DIY Broadband acoustic pannels on some folding frames) I am assuming it should still give very good results.

My other issue is were would be beast place to put the desk? I was under the impression to put the desk against the window and treat the room accordingly.

Any advice would be great!

The shed is a definite no-go - converting your millimeters to inches/feet, it's way too small - a little bigger than 6'x9'. Use the spare bedroom, make 2'x4'x4" bass traps that you can hang where needed/stack in the corners or move them out to the shed when guests are staying. Set up your desk facing the window, back to the rest of the room. If you need to put a sofa-bed in the room, put it on the wall opposite the window, if at all possible, to keep some symmetry in the room.

It still doesn't make the shed big enough but it's 9'6"" by 9'10" if you include the bit labelled as a vocal booth...

...which could make it even worse since it's so near square.

The bedroom with bass traps plus some temporary screens for when he does vocals is definitely the best idea.
