Looks like your going to need an interface with preamps for starters.
And a recording software may I suggest that you download Reaper for a free trial.

Oh and welcome to the forum!!

There has been an onslaught of new people here and sometimes I forget to say hey. :o

If technology/computers are a problem for you, you may get easily bogged down with computer-based recording.
You may want to look at a stand-alone recorder - anything from the Zoom series, to the Boss BRs, Tascams, etc. The learning curve for these is much less steep - basically plug in, and push the 'record' button to start out.

I agree with mjb stand alone is a simple way to get started most are pretty user friendly but i find some have such tiny screens that editing can be an issue but its a great start i still use my tascam dp01fx to record but i transfer the files to the computer after to edit and mix in reaper. its not the best set up but it works for me plus my computer isnt to great so recording direct in to the computer creates a lot of lagging

Can I have two beers instead of the slim jim?

Can I have two beers instead of the slim jim?

Absolutely. And since I brew my own beer, I don't need any help from the new guy in that department either.

I'll take two Slim Jims.

OP:I would definitely get an external soundcard (interface) as MS suggested. You will have more options in the end. IMO, you will find yourself limited with a stand-alone recorder unless you are looking for 'remote' recording. You stated you want to record at home though. PC recording can be a struggle for those that are not knowledgeable with computers. There is always help here and in other places. I can't read myself, but I hear that you can 'Google' pretty much any question you may have. For some, it is like learning a new language. For others, simple pooping.

Do some searching here and other places to form your own judgment of what feels right for you.

jimmy:)
