Hello everyone, I'm working on getting a small set up going, and the only thing i'm really missing right now is a audio interface, but working on getting one.

I'm totally an amature with all this, aside from me playing bass guitar in a band, my musical education ended in high school a few years ago. so forgive me as i don't know all the terms and everything.

What i'm wanting to do is do some simple folk-y type songs.

as far as my gear goes, here is what i have.
(college kid on a budget, so nothing is too pro)

Computer: Toshiba Qosmio Laptop, 4gig ddr3, dual core 2.0ghz
DAW: Mixcraft 4/5
Midi Keyboard: M-Audio Oxygen 61
Mic: Sure PG48
(stands, my guitars, blah blah blah)

As far as monitors go, I have none, Aside from a surround sound comptuer speakers)
but, I do have a Bass guitar cab (4x10" subs) and a 350watt bass guitar amp.
And a Crate KX-160 keyboard amp (single 15" with tweeter) with 4 different channels and everything.

Now its seems to me that most AI's have at least 2 outputs. So my question is. 1. is it okay to use my giant cabs as monitors. 2. if so, should i use the cabs as one for the left side, one for the right, or just have them stacked and more of a mono-style thing with both outputs into one amp (i have them rigged right now, where one of the outputs on the keyboard amp is into the input on the bass amp, and use the 15" for mid-to high's, and the 4x10's for mid-lows)

Another question I have, Is i want to have it were I can record a sound, and then I want to have it set up where i can push a key on my Midi keyboard, and it plays that selected sound. Any info on that?

any advice on my set up, tips, tricks, info, is all welcome.

OK, I wouldnt bother using your cabs as monitors. Best to just use a regular HiFi through the Aux input or headphones. You definately need an audio interface, the thing that plays back a recording when you hit a key is a sampler. You could look out for an old Akai on ebay or get a software based one. I have used GigaSampler before and it worked just fine. I got it free with a Tascam US122 which is an entry level interface with everything you need. Maybee check out if they are still doing that deal.
