New guitar (clip)

It's actually a very old guitar. The very first electric I've ever played and I used it for awhile. Forgot I still had it in my garage. It's a Yamaha. I've been saving for a strat but now I think I'll spend that money on something else because I'm happy with this one. Sounds good enough and it's real comfortable to play.

It's not mine though, my sister's boyfriend let me borrow it and he never asked for it back. He said he'd sell it to me for $120. Now I just need to come up with $120. :p

Anyway, here's a clip. Playing sucks cause I was just messing around and I didn't fiddle with effects settings or anything.

Let me know what you think. Would you pay $120 for it? Just curious.

Sounds good. Pay him. Never get rid of your first gtr of any type. I speak from painful experience. When you're 40 having paid $120 in the past won't make any difference but having your first elec gtr still around will.

Yea besides the fact that it sounds good, I got started on this guitar and used it for a couple years so it does mean something to me. I definitely plan on paying the $120, just hope I can come up with it in time. :(

The strings hadn't been changed since before I even got it (6+ years ago?) they were completely rusted. Fretboard was all grimey and the body looked like shit from being in the garage for so long. Took all the strings off, polished the body/fretboard, and put brand new strings on it. Looks like new now. :cool:
 
sounds good here danny. it's kind of funny that you were stressing over a guitar and that one was in the garage the whole time. :p
 
if it feels good and sounds good, it doesn't get any better for a g-man.imo.

Quick question. I dont know what guage strings were on it, maybe 10s. All I have now is 12's. I normally use 11s. I've had the strings on there for about 10 minutes now, I don't wanna damage the guitar/mess up the neck. Do you think the 12 guage strings will be too much tension and could mess up the neck? I unwinded them so they're loose now. I just don't wanna take the chance of messing it up especially since it's not mine yet. :o

Probably a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask.

I never used 12's before, but I think they sound/feel good. After playing only acoustic for so long they're not really difficult to play.

When I buy it I might go get it setup for 12's.

I'll probably need a new nut right? The lower 3 strings aren't sitting in there all the way, but there's no buzz or anything.
 
Any wound strings that don't fit in the nut slots, I'd change right away with strings that do, to avoid cracking the nut. Just get the nut cut eventually to fit the wider strings - the slots are easily cut with files to match the string diameter.

Yea guess I'll just get the nut cut so the strings will go in there. They're completely loose right now so there's no tension on the nut or the neck.

Gonna have to wait until tomorrow to get some different strings.

I gave away my last pack of electric strings to a friend cause I didn't think I'd be playing any electric for awhile (because my other electric guitar sucks).

Just found out this guitar is from the Yamaha Starter Pack that came with a Yamaha amp. :o EG303 or something is the model number.

I don't care though it sounds a million times better than my other guitar and I like it. Now I can actually play some electric stuff and not just acoustic. :cool:

Anyway, gonna get some 10 gauge strings tomorrow so I can play it. I keep wanting to pick it up but I can't. :(

I guess I'm easy to please after playing a shitty guitar for so long. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there with really nice guitars who would never play this one. :p
 
Yamaha makes good music gear, anything I have had that said Yamaha usually always performed quite well. I thinks 12's sound a bit heavy and Tim Lawler has a point that they could damage the nut-but if you are used to them and like them have it setup for them.
Is it a Pacifica model?

I agree. Yamaha also has good sounding acoustics from what I've tried. Even the low-price ones.

I have no idea if it's a Pacifica model. I might take some pics but if anyone has seen the Yamaha Starter Pack they've seen this guitar. :p

Model number is EG303. There's still the Yamaha amp in the garage. I remember it sounding like shit, but that was back when I was first learning so it was probably me who sounded like shit.

Either way, the clip I posted was a direct recording and I'm perfectly happy recording like that. At least for clean sounds.

Meh, my first electric was a Fender Tele, USA, with active pickups. This was about 20 years ago, and like most of the '80s, I'm glad it's gone!!!

I'm still using your MSH mics and I still love them. I'm using the MSH-M. Sounds great on acoustic and also works well for amps if I get the placement right. :cool:

I've never played a Tele before and I'm not really sure what the difference is. I have bought a Fender Squire before and it just sounded so bad. I paid $300 for it and ended up selling for $150. I just wanted that thing out of my room!

A real Tele is a beautiful thing. The beast I had . . . yikes. At the time, I thought it was clever to have EQ boost on the guitar, so I could drive my Peavey combo's SuperSat control beyond all reason.

Yeah, I'd like to have some of that time back :(

Your level of sucky playing could be someone else's level of pretty good playing..

I can't play like that! Sounds pretty good. Were you hitting harmonics on the B and E strings 12th fret? I never incorporate harmonics into anything. Maybe I should work on that.

Oh, and about your site, what's your webhost?

Yea, the harmonics are on the 12th fret, last 2 strings, B, and E. It's a song by Pearl Jam called Yellow Ledbetter. :)

I have no idea what my webhost is. A friend of mine is hosting it for me for free. GoDaddy.com is a good place to get hosting from, it costs about $9/mo or $100/year.

NL5 was gonna host it for me since I helped with his MP3 uploads (www.lightningmp3.com) but my friend offered it to me and I didn't wanna turn him down. :p
 
Congrats Danny - my brother used to play a starter Yamaha model that was very like that one - an EG112, it had a humbucker in the bridge - sweet guitar.

Great playing too.

Btw, 12's seem a bit heavy. And be careful with the nut. Go dig out that old Yamaha amp too, because I had one of their starter amps that was actually okay for clean.
