This is just something interesting I found myself this weekend.

For now, the biggest limitation for laptop recording is the slow hard drive speeds. My drive failed on my laptop Friday, and I had to do some fast research to replace it. I found out that Hitachi now makes a fast 7200rpm internal hard drive for laptops. I think this must be a fairly new thing because I don't recall seeing these last year when I was doing laptop research. Anyways, it is always best to use a fast external drive. But for a really mobile operation, it looks like this drive could be a really useful item. It would be nice to have only the laptop and a sound unit powered by the computer, like the new MOTU Travelerm or a usb powered device. You could record absolutely anywhere then.

By the way, I didn't end up buying this drive. I got a larger Toshiba drive so I could get back up as fast as possible. I did upgrade to 5400rpm from the stock 4200, though. And my laptop was great for recording before the incident...hopefully it will be even slightly better now. Of course, I put all my audio on an external drive, so I didn't really lose anything but a few days of productivity.

Just thought I'd share what I found out. Maybe it can help someone else out! By the way....never accidentaly sit a set of guitar pickups on your laptop right next to the hard drive. ;)

Here's their little blurb:

Industry first…AGAIN!
Introducing the industry's first enhancedavailability 7200 RPM mobile-class hard drive for 24x7 data-ready environments— Hitachi's Travelstar E7K60. The combination of speed and endurance on Hitachi's Travelstar E7K60 gives users an industrialstrength 2.5-inch hard drive to take on demanding data-access requirements typical of applications such as network routers, point-of-sale terminals, blade-servers, and telephony networking systems.

“Always on” for 24x7 access
Users who require high data availability can take advantage of the “always-on” characteristic of Hitachi's Travelstar E7K60. Because the drive never has to wake up from sleep mode, users can access their data more quickly yielding improved transactional time. The drives are designed to allow users to leave it powered on aroundthe- clock and supports a read/write duty cycle of up to 50 percent—more than twice the level supported on standard mobile drives.

Industry-proven technology
Designed specifically for continuous operation, the Travelstar E7K60 extends the Travelstar tradition of delivering performance and reliability. The 9.5mm high, 7200 RPM 2.5-inch Travelstar E7K60 provides added benefits to users, including minimal heat emission for optimal performance, low power consumption, and a small form factor for compact environments. The Hitachi Travelstar E7K60 series of hard disk drives utilizes proven storage technologies such as TrueTrack Servo, Drive Fitness TestTM (DFT), Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) to help maintain high-performance and fast seek times in always-on environments.
