Beginner's questions here. Any help would be appreciated.

-Is maudio 2496 pretty much the best budget beginner's soundcard?

-Which mics do you recommend and which preamps?

-How can I generate bass and drums on the computer? Do I need midi? Which software do you recommend?

-Does the soundcard come with recording/mixing software or do I need to get it separetely? Which ones are the best for a beginner?

Thanks!

My opinions:

If you are referring to the M-Audio Audiophile ($139), for the price it can't be beat. Excellent quality.

The following budget mics are liked by a lot of folks here for various applications. Use the BBS search function and you will find a lot of info about them. They are all between $50 - $200:
Studio Projects P B1, B3, C1
Marshall V67, MXL 990, MXL603s
Rode NT1a
Oktava MK 319, MC012
AT 3035

For a high quality budget preamp, I really like the M-Audio DMP3--so do a lot of other folks. The SP VTB-1 has a lot of fans as well, so do some of the Rane products.

Utilize the search function.

Soundcards don't come with tracking software. You can find good software from Cakewalk and Steinberg. Home Studio from Cakewalk, for example, will allow you to track audio, use loops, and program MIDI tracks.

You can generate drums and bass by buying loop CDs or by programing MIDI. If you use MIDI you will need a sound module or sampler to generate sounds or you can use a Soundblaster Live ($35) and use soundfonts (that's what I do). So I use two cards, M-Audio for audio and SB Live for soundfonts.

Go to www.prorec.com and search for soundfonts and you will find some excellent articles.

That's extremely helpful, thank you. I've already learned a ton from this website over the past week and it's great.
